THE RACING WORLD

FORM AT ELLERSLIE SOLARIUM MAKES THE GRADE. PROSPECTS FOR WAVERLEY. With th£ concluding day of the Ellerslie spring carnival to-day, and the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring • carnival at Trentham' on Saturday, this week is an important one in the Dominion racing world. In the last few days prior to the running of the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday, Solarium came into favour on account of his impressive track showings. Considering the strong opposition, the LimondSunbar gelding’s victory in the big Ellerslie handicap was a meritorious performance. After acting as pace-maker most of the way Solarium went on to win very comfortably from Korokio, and the fast-finishing Red Manfred. The time, 2m 345, was not exceptionally fast considering the good track and perfect weather conditions, but Solarium gave the distinct impression that he is going to be a force to be rec&oned with in northern handicaps this season. Solarium was an open’company winner at Avondale just after last Easter,, but at Marton last month, he was beaten by a moderate in Spearform. Class Guineas Performance.

Even though her big army of supporters were probably given a few anxidlis moments early on in the running of the Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on Saturday, Gay Blonde was ridden almost a perfect race by Tinker, and her slashing finishing burst was beautifully timed. The time recorded by Gay Blonde, Im 37 3-ss, for the mile, leaves no doubt but that she is well up to the standard of the leading tHree-year-olds of past seasons. The grit and courage shown by the Gay Shield filly over the business end on Saturday promise to carry her on to further classic honours this season. Speedy Galilee.

Although her task in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday was probably made easier by the speedy Lowry candidate, Kotou, being unlucky enough to fall, Galilee’s clear-cut win was an impressive performance. • ' The Chief g u l er _L a dy Bede filly showed noticeable improvement from her Paeroa winning effort, and there appears to be no doubt but that A. Cook’s stable is again sheltering an exceptionally speedy and promising juvenile.

Fairly Beat Flower Bag. In Miss Dazzle, a steeplechaser of great promise appears to have come into the northern racing limelight. Following her iniffel success over the Ellerslie country at the Pakuranga fixture in August, Miss Dazzle made the anticipated improvement to beat Flower Bag convincingly in the Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ellerslie bn Saturday. Miss Dazzle was out in front from barrier-rise to winning post, and never put a foot wrong over any of the fences. This Illumination—Fiery Cross mare, claims a woman owner, Miss T. M. Miller, and is an inmate of J. E. Thorpe’s Ellerslie stable. Red Manfred Near Best. Red Manfred’s finishing burst in the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday showed that last season’s leading stakeearner is now fast approaching his true form. For the Trentham carnival, Red Manfred promises to be just about at his best, and prominent showings on his part look likely in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday and the Harcourt Cup on Labour Day. In view of the fact that Red Manfred and Davolo now share the

position of top-weight for the coming New Zealand Cup, their clash at Trentham on Saturday will provide a lot of ■interest. - . Consistent Korokio. ' ' "'- • • Korokio’s series of consistent performances so far this season leave the definite impression that the Redfern mare is now just as good a performer as in her palmy three-year-old days, when her victories included the New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton. Korokio ran another class race to take second honours in the Mitchelson Cup on Saturday, and her showing drew attention to her prospects for a race like the Waverley Cup on Labour Day. Another Waverley Prospect. Carfex ran his usual reliable race to finish just behind the placed horses in the Mitchelson Cup. As he has not-been weighted for Trentham, Carfex looks likely to fulfil his Waverley Cup engagement in which race he promises to share early favouritism with Korokio. Lady Kyra Disappoints. Although it is probable that the race will have done her a lot pf good, Lady Kyra was never prominent in the running of the Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on Saturday, and was really outclassed by the performers who had the advantage of recent racing. Lady Kyra has been weighted 1 for the Brewer Handicap open sprint at Waverley, but the opposition looks very strong, including as it does Rereatu, who ran six furlongs at Ellerslie on Saturday in lnv 12 4-ss, Royal Routine, who’has now won - three. times in four starts, and the Hawera “flyer,” The Tiger. Lady Kyra will need- - to make a lot of improvement to foot it with this speedy trio. • . . ■■■

Prince Colossus Improving. The race which he had the first day benefited Prince Colossus, and the New Plymouth-trained performer made appreciable improvement in his showing at Opaki on Saturday.’ Even though he has .1 not had the racing which has been .doneby Korokio and Cartes; to. date this season,- Prince Colossus is very solid over a mile and a-quarter, -so that he may be capable of a prominent showing in the Waverley Cup.

Has Class for Waverley. s Rereatu added fresh laurels to. his excellent record this season by scoring decisively in the Shorts Handicap at EH- , lerslie on Saturday. Ilereatu has. been weighted in both the Brewer Handicap and the Waverley Cup and, ..if he comes ■ to the South Taranaki Labour Day fixture, Mr. Cecil Boles’ class performer must have bright prospects. Polydora in Form Again. t Polydora’s victory in the Teschemaker Handicap at Timaru on Saturday is certain to result in het advancing considerably in favour as a New Zealand Cup . prospect. Over 12 months ago Polydora definitely proved herself to be just about a match for any handicap performer racking in the South Island. However, of recent times, she has done very. little racing, but her success at Timaru'. was. fairly confidently predicted. With 8.3 Polydora occupies a handy position in this year’s New Zealand Cup field* Suited by Trentham. On the “horses for courses" ■ adage. Autopay is always a likely prOspect for any race which he contests at Trentham. < Following a fairly successful trip to Aus-, tralia, Autopay is billed to make his’NeoZealand reappearance in the Shorts Han» dicap at Trentham on Saturday. Con- , sidering his past class performances and recent Australian form, Autopay appears i well handicapped with 9.5/ In the past “the straight six” at Trentham has been to his liking. • • - ’ •
