LIVESTOCK FREIGHTS
BOARD REFUSES REDUCTION. REPLY TO FARMERS’ UNION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. It was announced at a Farmers’ Union executive meeting to-day that the Railways Board had declined a request for a reduction in freight rates on livestock. The rates are 50 per cent, above the prewar rates, but the board points out that operating costs have increased by about 60 per cent, and, moreover, prices for certain classes of livestock are appreciably higher than in pre-war days. The executive decided to approach the board again oil the subject.
