INGLEWOOD CROQUET
OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. COMMENT ON BEAUTY OF GREEN. The official opening of the Inglewood Croquet Club’s greens was held on Thursday afternoon in ideal weather. There was a large attendance and Mr. F. L. Hartnell, president of the New Zealand Croquet Association, in officially opening the greens, congratulated the club on its up-to-date and pretty greens. He said the Inglewood club had in proportion to its membership the best and prettiest greens in New Zealand. He congratulated the club on its standard of play during the season. Mr. J. Gibbs, Mayor, also congratulated the club on the way the grounds and surroundings were kept. He officially opened the playing area and Mrs. Minchin, a life member of the club, played the first ball.
Players engaged in golf, ladder and target croquet. The winners were: Golf, Mrs. Bublitz and Miss Doris Guy; target, Mrs, Codd; ladder, Mr. W. Spurdie. An iced cake donated by Mrs. Somerton was won by Miss N. Lovell. Flag five hundred held in the bandroom at night was won by Miss Zimmerman, Miss Lovell, Mrs. Egarr and Mr. Williams. Thirteen tables were engaged.
