CRICKET SEASON

COUNTRY COMPETITION TO-DAY. DISTINCT REVIVAL SHOWN. To-day will see the cricket season formally opened in North Taranaki, as the country senior competition will be opened this morning. In the country as well as in the town there has been a distinct revival in cricketing activities and indications point to a successful season. This year five teams are competing in the senior competition as compared with six last year when Tikorangi and Brixton each entered a B team as well as an A team in the senior grade. This year each of the four country teams which have provided such a keen competition over previous years have entered a team in the senior grade, which will comprise Tarurutangi, Tikorangi, Urenui and Brixton Tikorangi and Brixton are each entering a second team and so, too, is Tarurutangi this year. A new district to cricketing competitions, Mangorei is also entering a team. These four will form a junior division, Which will open next Saturday and should provide the younger players with more equal games than was possible last year. There will thus be eight country teams in action. each Saturday as compared with six last year. While the town and country line of demarcation is to be deprecated in most cases, in cricket such grouping is to bo commended as it enables country players to fix the hours of play at such times as will fit in with the exigencies of their work, hours that do not suit the town player, any more than his hours suit the dairy farmer. To-day Tarurutangi, last year’s champions, will be at home to Brixton and Urenui and Tikorangi will meet at Urenui.

Perhaps the most pleasing feature in connection with cricket this year is the interest aroused at Inglewood. The inland centre in the early days of this century had a team that could hold its own with the best in Taranaki but last year it was unable to muster a team. This year it is putting three elevens in the field, two of which will compete in the country Thursday competition whicn opens next Thursday, and one in the North Taranaki Saturday senior B competition. The entrance of two Inglewood teams will greatly benefit the Thursday competition, which last year resolved itself into a duo between Waitara and Stratford, both of which have again entered teams.
