A NIGHT OF FUN

STRATFORD SCHOOL BALL MANY CHILDREN IN FANCY DRESS. ATTENDANCE CREATES RECORD. All records were broken at the Stratford primary school’s annual fancy dress ball last night. The crowd was larger than ever, both of children and adults, and the sale of tickets prior to the opening of the. doors constituted a record. The total takings were estimated last night to be in the vicinity of £43. Fancy dresses were more in evidence than last year, practically the whole juvenile assembly being in carnival array. The effect was as delightful to onlookers as the ball obviously was to. the children. Suitable music was provided by Rogers’ orchestra, and a varied programme was carried through faultlessly and with a minimum of delay. Members of the committee were present in force and entered into their onerous duties with enthusiasm. While Mr. L. J. Furrie as headmaster was director-general of the ball, he was ably assisted by his staff, every member of which worked hard for the benefit of the children. Mr. E. Thomas was master of ceremonies, and the musical direction was in the hands of Mr. Hancock. For the parents one of the best features of the ball was the organised dancing done by the children, which went off splendidly. For the training of the infants, whose items were specially attractive, Miss Harper, infant mistress, and her staff were responsible. Miss Curd was in charge of the hall decorations. For the huge task of providing supper for the hundreds of children and parents a large committee, comprising the wives of committeemen and their friends was organised under the capable leadership of Mrs. P. Thomson. The children were accommodated in the two supper rooms without any bustle or confusion, and it was obvious that for many the splendid supper provided was one of the highlights of the evening. They did justice to it. The supper rooms were decorated by Mrs. L. J. Furrie, assisted by Misses Helen Coward and Rhea Furrie and Masters David and Dan Thomson.

Acknowledgments to Messrs. A. E. Pollock for assisting with decorations and E. D. Evans for the loan of furniture, were made by Mr. Furrie. Special thanks to the parents and friends who had so generously donated foodstuffs for the supper were expressed by both Mr. Furrie and Mrs. Thomson.
