PRISON FOR ROBBERY
SYDNEY CRIMINALS CONVICTED. AUDACIOUS THEFT OF JEWELLERY. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, Oct. 10. Found guilty of the audacious jewellery robbery in George Street on June 15, William Wallace, aged 27, and Eric Courteney, aged 34, were each sentenced to three years’ hard labour. The robbery took place at night when the street was densely crowded. Several men in an enclosed car stopped outside Angus and Cootes’ large jewellery shop. One man threw a brick and shattered a window, seized three trays of diamond rings valued at a considerable sum, and rushed back to the car. He was about to get inside when a policeman appeared on the scene. The man pointed something resembling a revolver at the policeman and leapt on to the running board. The car raced away and was lost in the traffic. It was later discovered that the thieves escaped with" £5OOO worth of. diamond rings. The constable tried to jump on to the running board of the car, but he fell to the roadway. Further on a pedestrian was knocked down. He grabbed the front of the car and was carried some distance before he fell to the road suffering slight injuries. The car used by the thieves was found abandoned in the suburb of Surry Hills. The car, ‘ which was stolen, contained the empty trays. A reward of £250 has been offered for the recovery of the rings.
