GOLD MEDAL IN SIGHT

OUTSTANDING YOUNG COW. By producing 714.291 b fat in 365 days under Government semi-official test, Maori Judy, the property of Mrs. G. E. O’Sullivan, Te Tana, Inglewood, looks certain to annex the gold medal for New Zealand for senior two-year-olds in Jersey cows. In addition this young cow produced 13,1141 b of milk for the year, or an average of just on 361 b daily for the whole 365 days. She milked as high as 511 b in her best day, and for one month averaged nearly 491 b daily. Her monthly figures are:—August, fat 3.41, milk 71.8 (2 days); September, fat 58.90, milk 1237.5; October, fat 71.72, milk 1463.8; November, fat 66.21, milk 1298.4; December, fat 63.06, milk 1327.0; January, fat 63.29, milk 1194.2; February, fat 58.01, milk 1074.7; March, fat 63.60, milk 1052.1; April, fat 60.42, milk 1060.0; May, fat 58.38, milk 1003.1; June, fat 53.11, milk 852.5; July, fat 46.94, milk 779.9; August, fat 47.24, milk 702.0 (29 days). Total, 714.291 b fat, 13,114.71 b milk. Maori Judy is by Maori Banker, a son of Hard Shot, which latter bull was a son of the champion show and butterfat cow Vivandiere, 10361 b fat (gold medaD. Her sire also is a grandson of the many times champion show cow Blfo Beauty, 8001 b fat (gold medal). On her dam’s side Maori Judy is descended through, her grandsire Meadowvale Gold King to Sultans Daisy (9681 b fat), the world’s champion butterfat holder for 1919-24, and in addition being one of the breed’s outstanding breeding matrons. From this it will be readily appreciated that Maori Judy has some of the breed’s richest blood in her veins, and it seems little wonder that she should be an outstanding producer as well As an exceptionally fine individual.

It is also worthy of note that a herd mate in Dawning Peace has also done exceptionally well under similar test conditions this 'year, having put up a record of 647.771 b fat, also as a senior two-year-old. In fact it looks quite possible that the young cow may gain a silver or a bronze medal as she has been runner-up to her companion for the greater part ■of the year. Dawning Peace is a daughter of Clarion C. 8.8. (Imp.), from Owlettes Peace, a daughter of Majesty’s Oxford Sultan (Imp.) and Neat Owlette, a noted breeder and show cow. These two records will add further to the lustre of Taranaki’s performances in the Jersey world and go further to enhance its title as the home of the Jersey.
