OHAWE SURF CLUB

SUCCESSES IN FIRST SEASON. MEMBERS’ ANNUAL MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Ohawe Surf Club was held at Hawera last night, Mr. W. J. Claringbold presiding over an attendance of 12. In commenting on the annual report (previously published), Mr. Claringbold congratulated the team on its successes last year. Thanks were due to members, not in the competition teams, who had regularly patrolled the beach every Sunday. The Ohawe Beach Improvement Society had given the club wonderful support and the members were deeply grateful for the interest displayed. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. J. E. Campbell; president, Mr. W. J. Claringbold; five vice-presidents; secretary, Mr. J. Tarrant; captain, Mr. A. J. Ryan; committee, Messrs. C. Dowdle, F. Potter and O. Brown; honorary surgeons, Drs. J. Cairney and W. M. Thomson; auditor, Mr. F. Potter; Surf Association delegates, Messrs. Claringbold and Ryan. Five new members were elected. The weekly practice night for the beginning of the season was fixed for Tuesday at the winter show buildings. It was decided that the Ohawe Beach Shield be open to competition this year, sections being water work, land drill and march past, as in the old Tabor Shield competition. Positions will be drawn and points allotted will be 20 for water work and 10 each for the other sections. Appreciative reference to the services of Messrs. Claringbold and M. Nelson (retiring secretary) was made by members, who regretted Mr. Nelson’s leaving the district. CONCERT AND GIFT AUCTION. PERFORMANCE AT TE KIRI. A gift auction and concert were held in the Te Kiri hall on Wednesday night. The proceeds were in aid of the tennis club and hall funds. There was a very good attendance, and the programme was most enjoyable—full of humour and fun. The result' of the gift auction was very satisfactory. The artists for the concert were present from Riverlea, and as far as Midhirst, besides local ones. A competition (cake) was won by Miss A. Collins and a ham by Mr. Laird, Midhirst. The concert programme was contributed by Mr. S. Richards, Miss Gadsby, Mr. Laird, Mrs. Laird, Miss Whitmill and the Riverlea Women’s Institute. A dance followed the concert for which the music was played by Miss Collins and Mrs. Beer junr. Mr. R. Gatenby was master of ceremonies. An extra was played by Mr. S. Richards. Mrs. Wright, Napier, is the guest of Mrs. H. Wa.tson. Ur. H .Watson has returned from his holiday. AUROA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. IMPROVEMENT IN ATTENDANCE. The monthly meeting of the Auroa School Committee was held on Tuesday. There were present Mr.-, J. C. Duff (chairman), Mrs. Benton (secretary) and Messrs. T. Hooper, T. Haworth, P. C. Hall and J. Hooper. The headmaster, Mr. L. M. Fairbrother, reported an appreciable improvement in the school attendance, which now reached 90 per cent, of the roll number. Mr. Fairbrother acknowledged receipt of ensilage for manuring purposes and stated the need for some lime and a little mangold seed to grow mangolds in the school plot. The medical officer visited the school during the month and found everything in order. The sum of £1 17s was received from' Mr. Bonetti’s concert which will be used to purchase a piccolo and music for the school band. A concrete path is to be made in front of the schoolhouse. Mr. T. Haworth was accorded a vote of thanks for a donation of lime for the school plots. The headmaster also reported a record entry of calves, there being about 30. A discussion took place about the methods used in judging calves from charts, etc., and the age of some calves entered. A holiday was granted to the school for People’s Day at the Hawera show. The chairman was elected a visiting committee for the month. 318 DOZEN EGGS SENT. GIFT TO PRESBYTERIAN HOME. The Presbyterian Home, Berhampore, Wellington, will receive 318 dozen eggs from Hawera, Eltham and Normanby. The large number has been collected in the last few days by women members of the St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Hawera, who have wrapped every egg in paper before sending them on. The collection is an annual event, and though the number this year is slightly less than it was last year satisfaction with the results was expressed by one member. The eggs were all voluntarily donated by members of the congregation of the churches. The last of the packages was sent away yesterday. Of the total sent Hawera contributed 240 dozen, Eltham 84 dozen and Normanby 34 dozen. Ten dozen bantam eggs were also collected by boys and girls. The eggs were duck, hen and turkey. KAPONGA THEATRE. HAROLD LLOYD TO-NIGHT. Harold Lloyd is the wizard of screen comedy art. A garden party in aid of the W.D.F.U., Okaiawa, will be held at “Holly Bank” on Labour Day. Smith and Trim, Ltd., Hawera, advertise particulars of their mart sales for to-day of fruit, smoked fish, cauliflowers and other vegetables and shrubs at 11 a.m., and poultry, including hens and ducks with ducklings and chickens, pongas, circular saw and shaft, pair sash cramps, furniture and quantity useful fiundries at 1.30 pjn.
