BATHS IMPROVEMENT

WORK DONE AT STRATFORD. MORE EXPENDITURE PROPQSED. Several marked improvements have been carried out at the Stratford, swimming baths during the past year, states, the annual report of the Stratford Old Pupils’ Amateur Swimming Club. With some financial assistance from the baths committee concrete was put down at one side and one end of the bath, and the floors of three dressing sheds were concreted. A springboard given by Mr. R. ! Watson was placed in position on blocks built for the purpose. The painting of the baths was undertaken by the club’s committee as somewhat of an experiment, and was not the success anticipated. However, the only cost to the club was the labour of spraying, since the firm supplying the material made no charge when the preparation did not come up to expectations. Several working bees were held at the baths during the season, and the club thanked those members who so generously gave up their time. Early in the season the committee approached the borough council with a view to the erection of public baths, but the proposals did not meet with favour, and in view of the fact that the High school now had a fine bath of its own the committee does not propose to press the matter further. Such available funds as the club has could now be well spent on further improvements, and it will be a recommendation to the incoming committee to take this in hand.
