SATISFACTION IN BRITAIN
CONTIN UED IMPROVEMENT
FUTURE AUSTRALIAN POLICY
ITS CONTINUATION CERTAIN
GOVERNMENT’S GOOD WORK

London, Sept. 16.
“The Australian election,” says the Times,” was fought so much on the issue of financial methods, on which there is such complete agreement between the United Australia and the Country parties, that it seems clear the Australian policy will be guided for three years by the principles which already have done so much to restore her credit.” The Daily Telegraph says: “The United Australia Party has reasons for being satisfied with the election returns. Labour has been split into two parties and no substantial progress has been shown by the Country Party, which is rather weaker. The Communists are nowhere. The Australian verdict is a mandate to the Government to carry on the good work. Australia has done what Britain has done and enjoys her reward in the shape of relief from taxation. The Commonwealth, happily, is running no risks in connection with banking.”
General gratification at Mr. J. A. Lyons retaining power was expressed in Canada, says a Vancouver cable. Australia’s remarkable recovery under his guidance is widely quoted as an example to Canada and the United States.
ENCOURAGING RECOGNITION
COMMENT IN NEW ZEALAND
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.
Commenting on the Australian Federal election the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes said the victory of the Lyons Government was very encouraging as a recognition by the Australian people of the courageous way the Commonwealth Government had faced the difficulties of the depression, entailing a programlne of unpopular and drastic measures and involving sacrifices by all sections of the community. It was a tribute to the common-sense of the Commonwealth people that they could distinguish between solid performance and illusory promises, added Mr. Forbes. The contest was between a Labour Party which was in office at the beginning of the depression and a Government that Had to take over unsolved problems from Labour. This made the result all the more significant as it showed that the people of Australia were determined to stand by stable and responsible government. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates remarked to-day that it appeared from the returns available that the Australian people had given a complete answer to the so-called monetary reformers who had been putting forward quack remedies.
In common with the rest of the world, said Mr. Coates, Australia had been passing through an entirely new set of circumstances, and it was evident that the people of the Commonwealth appreciated what had been done by the Government to meet the position. It was too early yet to discuss the effect the election would have on the question of the importation of Australian fruit into New Zealand.
