FANCY DRESS BALL
SUCCESSFUL TIKOKANGI EFFORT.
MANY DANCERS. IN COSTUMES.
Coloured streamers, Chinese lanterns and native foliage completely transformed the appearance of the Tikbrangi hall and provided an appropriate setting for the annual plain and fancy dress ball last night. The ball, recognised as one of the premier country dances, attracted over 250 dancers, 50 of whom were in fancy dress. St. Luke’s Anglican Church should benefit materially as a result of the splendid support received. ’ Thickly diagonally laced green, red and gold streamer completely disguised the peiling, while nikau and ppnga fronds provided effective wall decorations. Here and. there Chinese lanterns flickered, adding beauty to the scene. Beneath a canopy of streamers and. a background of closely arranged greenery Jack Hooker’s Merrymakers provided music for modern and old-time dances. The colour scheme extended to the supperroom, where daffodils, freesias and other spring flowers were the table decorations. The oustanding features of the ball were the number and quality of the fancy dresses. Every conceivable character and period were represented, and the grand march, a lengthy trail of over 50 dancers, provided a striking scene. The disguises in some cases were well-nigh perfect and many surprises occurred when the masks were removed. The Rev. H. S. Fussell, vicar of the parish, expressed appreciation of the support received. He thanked Mesdames D. Blackley and C. A. Taylor, New Plymouth, for judging, also the people who although hot on the committee had worked willingly to make the ball the success it had been. The judges, Mesdames Blackley and Taylor, made the following awards: Best lady, Miss Ibbotson (Old Woman in a Shoe); best man, Mr. A. C. Neilan (Sheik) 1, J.
