COUNTY’S ASSISTANCE

AERODROME FOR STRATFORD. COUNCIL GRANTS £2O A YEAR. The Stratford County Council decided on Saturday to assist towards providing an aerodrome at Stratford to the extent of £2O a year, the sum to represent a rebate on rates over the area to be used as an aerodrome. The deputation which met the borough council when the scheme was explained presented a report jvhich was received and discussed in committee, the resolution being released to the Press after the council had resumed in open meeting. The area to be set aside for an aerodrome lies between the end of Flint Road east and Beaconsfield Road. Full details of the plan were submitted to a public meeting at Stratford recently and were adopted by the meeting.

RAWHITIROA SCHOOL VISITED.

GENERAL NEWS OF THE DISTRICT.

Mr. J. Barclay, a member of the Taranaki Education Board, Mr. H. W. Insull, board secretary, and Mr. D. Mac Kay, chief agriculture instructor, visited the Rawhitiroa school on Thursady. They praised the many improvements made this year in the grounds and commended the headmaster, Mr. E. G. Smith, the committee, and the children. Each of the visitors addressed the children and inspected the rooms, commenting very favourably on the newly oiled floor. A total of 120 pinus radiata have been planted by the children as an extension to the old plantation. The monthly meeting of the hall committee was held on Wednesday night. Those present were Messrs. J. Gernhoefer (chairman), S. Ford. S. Johnson, L. Robinson, F. Tipler, and the secretary, Mr. J. Johnson. Reference was made to the rendered by the ladies of the district during the season. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Knuckey left by car yesterday for Auckland, where they will join the Niagara on a visit to Suva, Fiji. Mrs. Smith, New Plymouth, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Rye. Mr. and Mrs. J. Cocker and Mr. P. Jenkins have returned from Hamilton, where they attended the national Jersey sale. Mi-« Shaw, Hawera, who has been the guest of Miss D. Robinson, has returned. Mr. and Mrs. R. Belcher, Urenui, were the guests of Mrs. H. Belcher. SUPPORT FOR HIGH SCHOOL. ELTHAM BUSINESS MEN’S VIEW Support for the proposal to establish a district high school at Eltham was given by the Eltham Progress Committee on Friday night. Mr. C. N. Taplin in moving a motion to this effect said a high school would be of great benefit both to the children and to the town. No sound argument had been advanced against the proposal and only two voices had been raised in opposition. Other speakers also favoured the motion, which was carried unanimously. GENERAL ITEMS. Renewal Of Licenses Steady. A steady increase in the renewal of drivers’ licenses was noticed during the past month by the Stratford county inspector, Mr. S. J. Cuff. Forty issues, of which eight were to first applicants, brought the total of three and a-half months to 1202. Eltham Relief Fund.

The sum of £lO has been received from “My Lucky Star” art union by the Mayor of Eltham, Mr. I. J. Bridger. The Mayor’s relief fund now stands at £64 8s lOd in credit.

CONCLUDING DOUGLAS DANCE.

GENERAL AND PERSONAL NEWS.

A dance to conclude the season was held in the Douglas hall on Thursday. Music was supplied by Vinsen’s Ambassadors, while Mr. A. Smith was master of ceremonies.

The county council has commenced work on the tennis courts, on which the levelling and rolling is being done.

Mrs. Needham is visiting Wanganui, where her daughter, JWrs. Thompson, is in a private hospital, having undergone a serious operation. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Allen, Palmerston North, and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Bell, Hawera, recently made a short visit to relatives.

Miss J. Kovaleski, Tuna, is making a short stay at Douglas. Mrs. Rumball, Urenui, is staying with her son, Mr. W. McCracken.

KING’S THEATRE.

“SITTING PRETTY.”

Paramount's spectacular musical film, "Sitting Pretty,” will be finally screened to-night. From the opening to the final crash the picture is jammed with comedy, music and beautiful girls. The locale is Hollywood, and the characters are song writers, stars, producers and others. Jack Oakie, Jack Haley and Ginger Rogers arrive in Hollywood. The boys want to be song writers, and Ginger wants to appear in pictures. In the maddest melee ever conceived by a Hollywood scenario writer the boys do get a chance when Thelma Todd, a star, hires them. American radio stars such as the Pickens Sisters, Arthur Jarrett and Virginia Sale do the big song hits.
