GAME PLAYED AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

A team of Maori League football players defeated a Pakeha team by 20 points to 11 in a match at Western Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday- It was not a very inspiring exhibition but there were flashes of bright play, particularly by the Maori team when it threw the ball about freely, Some of the Pakeha team had obviously had enough play for the season and did not exert themselves overmuch. There were several promising recruits in the Maori team, Stohr, Hohaja and Niwa. The game will benefit the Maori players in view of Taranaki having to defend the Waitangi Shield against Auckland Maori at New Plymouth next Saturday;— The teams. were:— Maori: Broughton, Thoma?, Wipiti, Niwa, stohr, Hohaia, Robinson, McLeod, Thomson, McDonald, Taylor, Morgan, Conroy. Pakeha: Williams, W. Lewis, Wayne, Priar, Moorhead, Tamatea, Simonsen, Peddie, Lawrence, L. Lewis, Boniface, Andrews, L- Moorhead. Niwa opened the Maori account earlywhen he fielded a high kick blown to his wing by the high wind. Priar levelled the score almost immediately when he intercepted smartly and touched down near the posts. W. Lewis put Pakeha ahead with the conversion. . Play went quickly upfield to the Pakeha goal-line, when Morgan showed pace in a spurt over the line. Robinson converted. Quick play- saw Tamatea, Moorhead, Wayne and W. Lewis in a passing rush for Lewis to score and equalise. The score did not remain long even. The Maori full-back cleared into Boniface’s arms- and the Eastern forward charged to the line, where he passed to Wayne, who scored. The Maori team began to throw the ball about near the opposition line and Taylor and Robinson handled last for Robinson to touch, downRobinson converted, making the score 14 to 11 in favour of Maori. A smart opening from loose play by McDonald and Thomson finished strongly at the corner flag with a try, making the halftime score Maori 17, Pakeha 11, McLeod was too strong for half a dozen tacklers near the line and made an opening for Thomas to touch down. Skipper replaced Conroy, who was injured. The game was fairly dull over the concluding stages, nO further score resulting, the final figures being:— Maori. - - - 20 Pakeha 11 Mr. C.
