SPRING FLOWER SHOW

SUCCESS AT BELL BLOCK MRS. ALLEN’S CHAMPION BLOOM. SAVOURABLE COMMENT BY JUDGES ( ■ The high standard in exhibits and in staging for which the Bell Block spring flower show, held under the auspices of St. Luke’s ladies’ guild, has become renowned was fully maintained at the show on Saturday. The Bell Block hall was crowded all afternoon with admiring visitors, and all stalls did a. prosperous business. Both the quality of the blooms and the arranging of exhibits were very favourably commented on by all judges, and made a great difference to the success of the show. The outstanding bloom of the show was the champion daffodil “Hallmark” entered by Mrs. E. S. Allen, Waitara, which was described by the judge,. Mr. L. Rea, as a particularly fine specimen of a yellow trumpet. Mrs. Antunovic’s “Princess Margaret,” a white trumpet, was runner-up. The daffodil section was very difficult to judge, said Mr. Rea, competition being very close. The yellow trumpets were particularly good. “A very even section” was Mr. V. C. Davies’ comment on the cut blooms. The standard and the staging were excellent, he said. Enthusiastic praise of the fancy work section was given by the judge, Mrs. D. Blackley. The work was a remarkable improvement on that shown on previous occasions, she said, and the exliibits of Mrs. J. W. Newton Shannon, was outstanding. The school cluldren’s section was also very good indeed, and on the whole above the average. The splendid success of the show emphasised how keen the people of Bell Block were for things beautiful and good, said the Rev. W. S. C. Stephens in- his introductory address. He paid tribute to th'e work of Mrs. Street, president, and Mrs. French, secretary. The show could not do without them, he said. He referred also to the immense amount of toil and trouble both put in on behalf of the church all the year round. The proceeds of the show and card party would be for the general funds of St. Luke’s Church. Mr. Stephens thanked all who had worked for the good of the show and the churchj SACREDNESS OF GARDEN. ‘1 have been to many country shows in New Zealand,” said Mr. E. 'R. C. Gilmour, mayor of New Plymouth, and I ng-n honestly say that this is one of the best I have attended. There are some blooms here equal to anything it is possible to grow.” Mr. Gilmour stressed the sacredness of the garden and of all flowers. If all the care and devotion lavished on flowers were spent on {human beings there would be a much better world, he declared. He congratulated the committee xm a splendid display and declared the show open. Special prizes awarded were:— Silver cup, donated by Mr. J. . ±l.
