MANAIA GIRL GUIDES.

BIRTHDAY PARTY CELEBRATED.

The eighth birthday tea of the Manaia Girl Guides was held in St. David’s Sunday school hall on Friday of last week. Among those present were Mrs. Houston, provincial commissioner, officers of Hawera, Kaponga,. Otakeho and Manaia companies, members of the executive committee of the Otakeho Guides and newly-formed Brownie pack. A birthday tea was held early in the evening and a concert programme followed, including various displays by Guides and Brownies. The hall and tables were decorated with greenery and spring flowers. The scenery made an excellent setting for the birthday cake, which was given by the committee and iced and decorated by Mrs. W. J. Hill. The president, Mrs. P. H. Instone, wished the Guides many happy returns and expressed her regret at losing the captain, Miss B. Young, who is resigning her- position. Miss Young, Mrs. Instone said, had been with the Guides since the inauguration and had proved herself a most capable and efficient officer. Mrs. Instone also welcomed the newly-formed Brownie pack and its officers. The Guides had had an excellent year.

Miss Wood, lieutenant of the Kaponga Guides, and Mrs. Nicholl, president of the executive committee of the Otakeho Guides; both extended good wishes. The candles on the birthday cake were lit by Eunice Chong, the youngest Guide, and the cake was cut by Mrs. Houston.

After tea the following programme was rendered: Song, Rev. R. Miller; duet, Mrs. and Miss Mackie; piano and violin duet, Phyllis and Mavis Walters; song, Ngaere Fox; signalling, Guides Jean Wells, Ngaere Payne and Margaret Innes; songs, Noelene Spooner and Dawn Reardon; recitation, Pat Baldwin; recitation, Jean Mellor; dance, Nancy Crompton and Hazel Walters; vocal items, Betty Bell, and Margaret Putt (Otakeho); recitations, Betty and Joan Simmons; violin solo, Noelene Spooner; song, Otakeho Brownies; song, Miss M. Mackie (Otakeho).

There followed the enrolment by Mrs. Houston of the following Brownies, who received tenderfoot badges: Elves, Sixer H. Davies, Second Sixer P. Walters, Brownies J. and B. Simmons, N. Crompton, E. Fendell, D. Reardon; Fairies, Sixer M. Scown, Second Sixer N. Spooner, Brownies E. Schicker, M. Cryer, A. Coull, P. Baldwin, A. Mead; Gnomes, Sixer D. Fendall, Second Sixer J. Sutton, Brownies N. Fox, J. Mellor, H. Ingram and M. Walters. The following Guides received tenderfoot badges: M. Auton, E. Chong and E. Mackay. Mesdames J. Rodie and A. Baldwin were initiated as members of the Manaia executive committee.

A presentation was then made to Miss Young by Mrs. Instone on behalf of the executive, Girl Guides, and ex-Guides in recognition of her valuable service. Mrs. Instone presented Miss Young with a clock and bouquets were presented by Margaret Innes (Guides) and P. Walters (Brownies). Miss Young replied.
