CHILDREN’S GALA NIGHT

'CENTRAL SCHOOL BALL HELD HAPPY PUPILS IN FANCY DRESS. COLOURFUL SIGHT PRESENTED. Last night was gala night for several hundreds of New Plymouth Central school children. About seven o’clock the roads leading to the Coronation Hall were enlivened by odd little figures in every sort of outlandish costume, all hastening in chattering excitement to the scene of the fancy dress ball which the Central School Committee has made an annual fixture. „ A child that is permitted to “dress up in mother’s old-fashioned skirt and to parade in her hat with the big ostrich plume, feels almost that there is nothing left to desire. But when it wears the uniform of a dashing hussar, or a tram conductor, or a fairy, and is taken to a brightly decorated hall where all its friends are dancing, then happiness grows almost hectic. Home work has never been, to-morrow’s school is weeks ahead and “teacher” dances with everyone. For supper there is fruit salad and red jelly and sandwiches and cakes oozing with cream. Judging from enthusiastic comments and from laughing faces it was one of the most successful as well as the most colourful balls of the season. Only one fault was found with it. “Gosh,” said one small dancer, “it’s too early to go home yet.” The dance was run by the Central School Committee and members of the staff acted as masters of ceremonies. Mrs. W. Huggett, assisted by a willing band of helpers, was responsible for the supper arrangements. Music was supplied by McNeill’s orchestra. After the children had left a dance for adults was held. Messrs. J. O. Turner and A.- Feakins were masters of ceremonies. Children at the dance were:—
