SALES OF SHEEP AND CATTLE

MARKET AT ADDINGTON YARDS. FAT CATTLE SHOW IMPROVEMENT. KEEN DEMAND FOR HOGGETS. Christchurch, Sept. 12. Average sized yardings were forward at to-day’s Addington market except in the fat sheep section, in which there was an over supply. This department recorded an easing of Is to Is 6d a head, but all other sections maintained late rates. Store sheep: In a small entry hoggets predominated and for these there was a keen sale. Adult wethers sold to 22s 6d, and old ewes and lambs to 10s lid. Fat sheep: 6000 were penned, compared with 3000 at the preceding sale. The hoggets, which were sold at the beginning of the sale, recorded a drop, but adult sheep sold well considering the heavy entry. A big representation of South Otago and Southland sheep was penned and a proportion was passed. Extra prime heavy wethers sold to 32s lOd; prime heavy, 29s to 31s; prime med-ium-weight, 25s 6d to 28s; ordinary, 21s 6d to 255; light, to 21s; extra prime heavy ewes, to 295; prime heavy, 23s to 26s '6d; prime medium-weight, 21s 6d to 22s 6d; ordinary, 18s 6d to 21s; light, to 18s.

Fat cattle: 410 were penned, including 70 from South Otago and some truck lots from South Canterbury. Values were from par to 10s better than last week. Best beef made from 29s 6d to 31s; extra to 32s 6d per 1001 b.; prime heavy, 26s to 295; ordinary, 22s 6d to 25s 6d; secondary, 20s to 22s Id; and rough down to 18s 6d. HIGHEST PRICES IN YEARS FAT CATTLE AT WESTFIELD YARDS ALL WELL UP TO QUALITY. Auckland, Sept. 12. The sale of fat cattle at Westfield brought the highest prices of recent years. An average yarding included some very fine steers, and the general quality was well up to standard. Competition was exceptionally keen, and values all round improved by 2s to '3s per 1001 b.; 75 steers sold for over £lO. Extra choice ox beef made 31s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, 28s to 30s; secondary and plain, 22s to 275; prime young cow and heifer beef, 27s to 30s; other cow beef, 17s to 265. Extra heavy prime steers made £l3 to £l4 ss; heavy prime, £ll 10s to £l2 17s 6d; lighter prime, £lO to £ll 7s 6d; light prime, £8 10s to £9 17s 6d; small and unfinished, £5 12s 6d to £8 7s 6d; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £8 to £8 15s; heavy prime, £6 15s to £7 17s 6d; lighter prime, £5 10s to £6 12s 6d; other killable cows, £2 to £5 7s 6d. Calves were yarded in large numbers, the quality being fair, with some outstanding lines included. Competition was very keen throughout, and runners and heavy medium vealers sold at improved prices, while light and rough sorts were very firm at late rates. Runners, 50s to 115 s; vealers, 30s to 78s; bobby calves, Is to ss. Ample feed and the drafting of flocks brought in a much larger yarding of sheep, with a plentiful supply of dry ewes. All good sheep sold it about last week’s prices, but rougher sorts were easier owing to the large supply of better lines. There were also more hoggets in the market, the quality being good, but values tended to be easier. Wethers, prime, 26s to 335; unfinished, 16s to 25s 6d; shorn, 25s 6d to 275; ewes, prime, 24s to 28s 9d; unfinished, 21s to 23s 9d; shorn, 22s 9d; hoggets, best, 17s to 30s 6d; others, 14s to 16s. Spring lambs were offered in about the same number as last week, and sold well. Best made 28s to 31s 3d; smaller, 18s to 275.

The pig pens were well filled, the yarding being about 1000. Finished baconers were plentiful, and sold at late rates, while porkers also were very firm. Stores were yarded in larger numbers, and competition was keen throughout, with last week’s advanced prices fully sustained. Baconers, 56s to 80s; porkers, 28s to 525; large stores, 24s to 345. Prices per lb., baconers, 54d to 6d; porkers, 5 Id to 6d. SALE AT STORTFORD LODGE SATISFACTORY BEEF PRICES. BIDDING BEST FOR SEVEN YEARS. Hastings, Sept. 12. Highly satisfactory levels for beef cattle were seen at the Stortford Lodge sale to-day, prices realised showing an advance of fully 30s a head on all classes, the prime cattle bidding being the most spirited seen on the Hawke’s Bay market for seven years. Prime heavy bullocks reached £ll 10s, while prime heavy heifers made £9 and prime cow beef comfortably topped the £8 mark. Outside competition was responsible for the bulk of the demand, the entry numbering 182 head. In the store cattle pens keen demand from graziers saw forward bullocks sell to £6 12s; rising 4-year-old steers to £6 3s; and 2year steers to £4 Bs. Improved rates were seen in the fat sheep section, prune ewe mutton selling to 26s 9d, prime wethers to 325, and hoggets to 23s 2d., In the store sheep section healthy competition was also seen, ewes and lambs selling at from 14s 8d to 16s 9d a head; aged ewes to 16s sd; wether hoggets to 23s 2d; and ewe hoggets to 25s 2d. SMALL BURNSIDE ENTRIES NO CHANGE IN FAT CATTLE RATES. FIRM DEMAND FOR BACONERS. Dunedin, Sept. 12. There were smaller entries in the major sections at Burnside to-day. Fat cattle numbered 257 head, the quality being inferior to recent offerings. Prices showed no quotable change on late rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold to £l3 12s 6d; prime heavy, £9 17s 6d to £ll 10s; medium, £7 15s to £9 7s 6d; light, down to £5 17s 6d; extra prime heifers, to £9 12s 6d; and extra prime cows, to £9 ss.

A small entry of store cattle included a few pens of three and four-year-old steers, which sold to £5 17s. Best cows sold to £4 ss, and the bulk of the entry realised from 30s to £2 10s. The smallest entry of fat sheep for some time, numbering 1150, included several consignments of heavy wethers with a smaller proportion of heavy ewes than usual. On account of the short supply, quality sheep rose in value by fully 2s 6d a head, while light descriptions advanced from Is to Is 6d. A large entry of 157 store pigs sold at satisfactory prices. BEEF SELLS AT FIRM RATES REPORT FROM JOHNSONVILLE. SPRING LAMBS MEET DEMAND. Wellington, Sept. 12. A- small yarding of cattle and an average yarding of sheep came forward at the Johnsonville sale held yesterday by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Owing to the limited yarding all classes of beef were firm at late rates. The sheep yarding comprised good quality wethers and ewes, with a small offering of hoggets and spring lambs. Wethers were on a par with last week’s rates, while ewes were easier to the extent of Is to Is 6d per head. Spring lambs met with keen competition.
