SILVER JUBILEE OF REIGN
EMPIRE-WIDE PRESENTATION. PREPARATION FOR CEREMONIES. Early action to mark the celebration on May 8, 1935, of the silver jubilee of the accession of Their Majesties, King George and Queen Mary, to the throne, is being taken by 11 well-known societies, with a huge membership throughout the British Empire, according to ad-vice-received by the Canterbury branch
of the Royal Empire Society. The plan to be undertaken is that of collecting one shilling from the largest possible number of the various societies, the sum collected in this way to be disposed of at the sole discretion of Their Majesties. The societies taking part in this joint action are the Royal Empire Society, the British Empire League, the African Society, the Victoria League, the Overseas League, the Empire Day Movement, the League of the Empire, the British Women’s Hospitality Committee, the.Universities’ Bureau of the British Empire, the Dominion Students’ Hospitality Fund, and the Empire School Tours Committee. The Royal Empire Society alone has a membership of 15,000, and some of the others taking part have a still greater
membership, so that the sum collected should , run into thousands of pounds. The communication .received by the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society states that the money collected will be accompanied by a brief memorial signed by the chairmen of all the participating societies, expressing in their name the humble duty of the members of tire societies to Their Majesties and their rejoicing at the attainment of Their Majesties’ . silver jubilee. The proposal also allows for the joint entertainment at a banquet in London by the participating societies of leading representatives of the various component parts of the British Empire, who may be visiting London for the silver jubilee rejoicings.
