LEVESON-GOWER’S ELEVEN
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.
London, Sept. 11.
The Australian cricketers defeated Leveson-Gower’s eleven easily by an innings and 48 runs, the Englishmen following on after their first innings of 223 to make 218. The Australians made 489. Leyland and Hendren were top scorers for the Englishmen with 42 each. Fleet-wood-Smith again troubled the batsmen. Leveson-Gower’s team, following on to-day, lost Wyatt when the total was 18. Sutcliffe was brighter than usual until he was clean bowled by Fleet-wood-Smith with a beautiful ball. Leyland and Hendren, driving hard, raised 100 in 95 minutes, then Leyland was run out as the result of a splendid return by Woodfull.
With Hendren out and the total four for 134, Human and Nichols were left with the responsibility of averting an innings defeat, but they failed to stay long. Sturdy hitting by Townsend prolonged the innings, but the side was all out after 225 minutes. Fleetwood-Smith after lunch took five wickets for 42 runs off 17 overs, and was largely responsible for Australia’s easy victory. The scores are: — AUSTRALIA.
