HAWERA TRAINING TRACK

CHANCER OF WANGANUI RUNNERS.

RIDING ENGAGEMENTS ANNOUNCED

(By “Childers.”)

Twelve Hawera horses left for Wanganui by train yesterday, Rose Ray being the only one to decline her engagements. J. Brown took Harvest Moon, Carfex, Eara and Fairfax; C. Jackson, Aga Khan and Diagano; T. H. Fryer, Colossal and Taitoru; F. Walker, Crennatown; M. Conway, Benedictine; G. Richards, The Tiger; and B. C. La Pouple, Gold Gleam. The present intentions of R. Brough and E. Fryer are to take Beau Star and Silk Sox down on Friday to compete on the sacond day.

On his running at the combined hunt meeting Harvest Moon would appear to have an excellent chance of winning the maiden event. However, nis track work since then has not been up to his usual standard and he will need to improve on it if he is to lead the field heme today.

With Taitoru, Colossal, Crennakwn and Benedictine engaged, Hawera is numerically strong in the Putiki Hack but nevertheless they are nut a formidable quartet. Taitoru disappointed at New Plymouth and is not back at his best yet. Colossal Is speedy, but may find the distance beyond him. Crennatown is in need of racing. Perhaps a surprise . may come from Benedictine, who bears a greatly improved appearance since racing at the hunt meeting. He ran his best race to date in a similar class of event at Wanganui last autumn, and a reproduction of this form would find the moody Peach Brandy gelding in the money. . ♦ • Diagano has a dual engagement, but in whichever he is started he is likely to command respect. He has gone on the right way since the New Plymouth meeting and consequently can be expected to show much improved form. Gold Gleam is opposed by a strong field in the Durie Hack, and in his present condition seems to possess little chance. He should be greatly benefited by the race. With Bst 11b The Tiger must make a bold showing in the Flying Handicap, tot he will be admirably suited by the turning track. With his great brilliance he should set a merry pace over the early stages. Aga Khan does not appeal as a likely winner of the Flying, but if started over a longer journey oh Saturday he should give a much better account' of himself. He is in fine fettle at present and should not be long in earning a winning bracket. Carfex is to race on the second day only. He is to be, a starter in the Higgie Handicap of a. mile and a distance in which his prospects look extremely bright. The honest little Nigger Minstrel gelding is rapidly approaching his best form. Eara is also to be reserved for the second day, when she claims an engagement in the. Trial Handicap. This filly has worked pleasingly since running at New Plymouth, where she was unaccountably well supported, and she should run a much better race than she did at her last start. Fairfax was taken down by J. Brown in order that she may gain travelling experience, and Vs to take part in the parade to-day. A good deal of interest will be centred in the manner in which this youngster shapes as her appearance and breeding are of the very best. Being a half sister to Jonathan by that fine sire Limond, she is bred in the purple. Very few of the trainers have riders engaged yet. N. Vaughan is to ride Crennatown and W. Broughton The Tiger. Of the remainder K. Voitre is likely to be on J. Brown’s trio and L. J. Ellis on Aga Khan and Diagano, but neither have been definitely engaged. I. Tucker will have the mount qnl Ruanui in the Okehu Hurdles while in the same event N. Trillo is to ride Brigadore. Trillo was riding work yesterday morning and appears to be quite fit for today. He returns to Hastings at the conclusion of the Wanganui meeting.
