WANGANUI OPENS TO=DAY

SPLENDID FIELDS ENGAGED MA RAN GAI HANDICAP CONTEST. REVIEW OF HORSES’ PROSPECTS. (By “Hurry On.”) There will be no scarcity of horses at Wanganui to-day for the opening of the spring meeting, and the club should have a successful gathering. The Taranaki contingent is not as strong as usual, but the horses are a well-conditioned lot who should pay their way. Tire one-pool system of totalisator wagering, paying on the 75-25 basis, will be in operation. Special trains will run for the convenience of patrons from this province. . The programme will opon at 12.30 p.m. with the MAIDEN RACE.

These events are often pitfalls for punters at this time of the year. Royal Feast has several solid performances to his credit in good company. Sunee and Dawn Princess have been galloping well on the tracks, while Marsong, Saxony And Harvest Moon have all shown pace in recent races. Among the three-year-olds Note Issue was a fair two-year-old, Hunting Queen has been accepted for in the Guineas, ROipar was second tp Hunting Lodge at Marton. The race is Very open, but the favourites may be Royal Feast, Sunee and Reipar. 110— OKEHU HACK HURDLES HANDICAP. Of £llO. One mile and three-quarters.

Emotion showed up well at Riccarton, and his fencing is improving. Esteem seldom runs a-bad race. His show ng at Marton and Riccarton stamp Bnga dore as one of the most promising hurdlers in commission. Recent racing h s improved Silent Bill, who will only have to act up to his form last week to be in the picture. Ruanui in the mood might prove hard to dispose of, while Kinross should do better than he. did at Marton. Red Sun and Calydon qre a pair of likely novices. In a good pool most money may come for Bngadore, Silent Bill and Emotion. ,i 55 .* PUTIKI HACK HANDICAP. Of £lOO. One mile and 110 yards. n a nn 7 7

Rust may not be ready, hut her tace at Marton should have improved Best. Taitoru will be bracketed with Colossal,, and this pair will be entitled to respect as both are well forward. King Thomond showed signs of returning to form at Marton., Davistock ran a fair face in open Company at New Plymouth, and his recent track work suggests that he will be prominent at the finish hereHeadmistress is another who has been galloping in good style. Among the lightweights the three hunters, bantoft, Hukemanu and Crennatown,. may do best. Wagering will take a wide range, but good support should come for the Taitoru-Coloseal bracket, Headmistress and Santoft. 240 MARANGAI HANDICAP.

Despite his outing at Marton Kings Knave is not likely to be quite ready yet, and the same applies to Spiral. Tiger Gain, who has raced during the winter, will have the necessary condition. He is a good horse when right. Plateau would have to stage a big improvement on his Marton showing to have a chance. Limbohm and Mercian Prince are a pair of promoted hacks who have thrown out big promise during the winter meetings. Beryl Latour is always a possibility. Racing condition plays a big part in distance races at this period of the year and for this reason Mercian Prince, Tiger Gain and Limbohm may be best fancied. 3.25-“-, SEAFIELD HANDICAP.

Orapai has a big weight here, but he is a good horSe who can handle it. Pomp is not reliable but usually gives his best for L. J. Ellis. Rereatu, who was unlucky at Marton, will command a following. Much interest will centre round the showing of Mother Superior in view of her Guineas engagement on Saturday. Passion Fruit has no recent form. Korokio, Lalla Quex and Prolyxo are all possibilities. The favourites may be Orapai, Rereatu and Mother Superior. 4.10 — DURIE HACK HANDICAP. Of £lOO. Six furlongs.

Hunting Jay is a good hack whose recent form has been consistent. Diagano, if reserved for this, would be entitled to consideration. Hunting Lodge who has won on the occasions of her last two starts, will have her chance of making three in a row. She finished impressively at Marton. Synagogue would only have th strike his two-year-old form to have a great charice with 8.4. Couptega and Gold Gleam can both muster up a great turn of pace. Bodyline, Rerepai and Canopy were fair two-year-olds and the latter has been galloping- in good style in company with Burnish. Leo Colossus ran two capital races at New Plymouth. He is a good beginner and on the up-grade. Ethiop and Windward have lightweight chances. A great deal will depend upon the jump out, but the main fancies may be Canopy, Leo Colossus and Hunting Lodge. 4.55— FLYING HANDICAP.

Orapai may not be a starter here. Cadland, after his win at Marton, will command a big following. Inflation was lame after a.good gallop last week, but the trouble was not expected to prove serious. Both Good Hunting and The Tiger usually race well on this course. Burnish has been galloping so well that she is certain to make a bold bid. Pin

Money’s early pace will be an advantage on the turning track. The best supported may be Burnish, Cadland and Pin Money.
