MATA DEFEATED AT CRICKET.

MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A euchre party to raise funds for the Fraser Road Golf Club was ( held on Friday evening and drew a large attendance. The prizewinners were: Ladies, Miss D. Johnstone 1, Miss Mildenhall 2; men, Mr. A. Campbell 1, Mr. H. Sharpe 2. The travelling prizes were won by Mrs. Young and Mr. P. Rangi. A competition for a men’s cardigan was won by Mr. A. Death, Hawera. Mr. A. Notman was master of ceremonies for the dancing, the music being played by Mrs. A. Campbell, Misses M. and T. Gibson, Misses D. and E. Sanderson and Mr. P. Rangi. The first cricket match of the season was played at Mata during the weekend when the Fraser Road tpam defeated Mata by 107 for nine wickets to 43. N. Lee (22) was Mata’s most successful batsman and for Fraser Road R. Kennedy made 37 not out, A. Newall 14, J. Pullen 13 and M. Death 13. F. Martin took six wickets for Mata, while J. Pullen four* wickets and A. Newall four wickets were the most successful bowlers for Fraser Road.

A meeting of the Fraser Road School Committee was held on Friday evening, those present being Messrs. J. Moller (chairman), F. Dunlop (honorary secretary), E. Gibson and S. Death. It was decided to hold a working-bee to plant half an acre of potatoes at the school. The head teacher (Mr. Galbraith) reported that the average attendance was 51.3. The attendance lasi, term had been seriously affected by measles and at present chicken-pox was prevalent. The committee authorised the purchase of raffia, a set of cricket wickets and potatoes for a variety trial.

EUCHRE PARTY AT ROWAN.

PERSONAL ITEMS OF DISTRICT: - Last week there was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party and dance at Rowan. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Dempsey and Mr. George Cuff. Music was supplied by Mrs. and Miss Sattler. Miss V. Mellow has returned from an extended visit to the Waikato, Feilding and Palmerston North. Mr. Ron Dempsey is visiting Hamilton. Mrs. Nichol, Wanganui, spent a few days with Mrs. Dempsey. Mr. and Mrs. Lee have been visiting old friends in the district. Mr. A. Denhan,: senr., is an inmate of the Hawera hospital. CYCLE RACE AGAINST WIND. LIMIT RIDERS FILL PLACES. Getting so good a start with a following wind and their handicaps in the early stages that the virtual scratch riders had not enough time to make up the deficiency on the hard pull home, riders on long handicaps filled the places m the Hawera Ramblers’ Cycle Club’s 12mile road race round Normanby yesterday. The .'course was from Hawera to Normanby and back to Hawera by Ketemarae and South Roads. A strong wind blew, to the Ketemarae Road comer, behind the riders, but the rest of the journey was hard. M. Condon won eventually by a foot from W. ’ Parker. J. Wills secured fastest time.

The race was an open one and the limit men clapped on the pace to Normanby, where the riders further back had not made any impression at all. The rest of the journey found the leaders keeping together, and Condon and Parker fought out a great finish. Wills secured fastest time fairly comfortably from Adams and Landers, who were equal for second fastest time, and seventh place.

SPRING BULBS AT PATE A.

ST. GEORGE’S GUILD EFFORT.

The annual spring flower show of St. George’s ladies’ guild was held in the Patea town hall supper room this week, the entries being of a particularly, high standard. Bitterly cold weather militated against a large attendance, but the display of beautiful blooms attracted many flower lovers from a,wide district. Messrs. W. Bremer and W. D. Knowles exhibited some particularly fine daffodils. A collection of primroses made a beautiful array. Mrs. W. F. Sheild judged the entries, the following being the awards: Best collection of bulbs, Mr. W. Bremer 1, Mr. W. Knowles 2; spring flowers, Miss M. Knowles 1, Mrs. F. Spooner 2; primroses and polyanthi, Miss M. Knowles 1, Miss H. Simmons 2; bowl of flowers, Miss H. Simmons 1, Mrs. I. Jones 2. Mr. W. Bremer v.h.c. Mrs. G. Laing was flower steward. Afternoon tea was served under the direction of Mesdames R. Honeyfield, T. Hills and Miss Darbyshire, the fixture being controlled by the secretary, Mrs. W. Kelly. Songs were sung by Mrs. I. Jones and Mrs. G. Corbett and recitations were given by Miss A. Hall, Kakaramea. Prizes were distributed by the vicar, the Rev. W. H. Walton. WOMEN’S GOLF AT HAWERA. MONTHLY L.G.U. MEDAL PLAY. Members of the Hawera Ladies’ Golf Club will compete in the monthly L.G.U. medal competition to-morrow. The draw is:— Senior: Mrs. Farquharson v. Miss V. Death, Mrs. Dickie v. Mrs. Hunt, Miss E.
