WAITARA SCHOOL ROLL
SICKNESS AFFECTS ATTENDANCE. The monthly meeting of the Waitara School Committee was held on Monday night. Members present were Messrs. W. B Glasgow (chairman), A. Chadwick, P. Appleby, R. Armstrong, E. Pryme, H. R. Pickering, A. S. McGregor (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. F. R. S. Bullen. The chairman expressed the committee’s regret at the death of Mrs. L. Old, the wife of one of the committee members. Mrs. Old had entered into many activities on behalf of the school, he said, and they would recall that only at the time of the fair she had taken on the work of looking after the afternoon tea. Her children at school had been perfect, and to them and to Mr;. Old the committee extended sympathy. The headmaster reported' that at the reopening after the vacation 17 scholars were admitted and one withdrawn, making the roll number 416. Owing to the epidemic of measles and mumps the average attendance last week was only 317 or 76 per cent, of the roll number. About 70 children were suffering from measles and 12 from mumps. The chairman reported that the resurfacing of the playground had been completed at a cost of between £BO and £9O. t , Messrs. Pickering and Pryme reported visiting the school during the month. The playground looked very well. The chairman said it had been suggested that in order to keep measles and mumps from spreading the school should be closed, but after a discussion it was concluded it was better to continue. In reply to a question the headmaster said he had been thinking of doing something to help the funds. The fair last year was a great success, and did riot disrupt the work of the school The committee generally thought the fair was the best proposition as it was not costly to the parents. It was decided that the headmaster should go into the matter, considering the holding of an entertainment during the first term, rhe chairman favoured a concert one year and a fair the next. Messrs. Appleby and Armstrong were appointed a visiting committee for September.
