WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Okaiawa:- The Okaiawa institute held its monthly meeting in the hall on Friday, Mrs. Good, president, presiding over a good attendance, members being present from the Te Roti, Whareroa, Hawera and Normanby institutes. Mrs. Larcom gave a talk on the forthcoming conference to be held at Hawera. The birthday party of the institute was also discussed. Miss Stoddart and Mrs. Close were elected new members. A guessing competition was won by Miss W. Oldfield. Button-hole competition winners were: Mrs. Good 1, Miss F. Sutherland 2, Miss E. Cameron and Mrs. Mortimer equal 3. Misses F. Sutherland and V. Mortimer were hostesses. Tikorangi: The branch met at the hall on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs. A. Whitehead presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Beaven and Mrs. B. Jury were elected delegates to the half-year-ly council meeting at Hawera next month. An amusing competition, the making of a hat from a sheet of paper and four pins, caused a great deal of fun, especially as the hats had to be worn when being judged. Mrs. C. Sarten won the competition. An interesting demonstration of wreath and posymaking was given by Mrs. J. linkshear, New Plymouth, a number of members helping with the work to gain experience. A competition for the bestarranged jam jar of flowers was judged by Mrs. Lankshear, the winner being Miss I. Foreman. The hostesses, Mrs. A. Whitehead, Mrs. L. Sarten and Miss R. Griffiths, had the tea tables decorated with bowls of anemones and spring bulbs.

Kait&ke: On Thursday a meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. F. Bagley to discuss the formation of a womens institute. Mrs. W. Kaye, president of the Taranaki Federation, and Mrs. <W. J. Smith, Inglewood, were present. Mrs. Kaye outlined the history Of the movement and also its aims and ideals. At the conclusion of her address it was unanimously decided that a branch be formed. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. L. Hughes; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. E. Laurence; secretary, Mrs. F. Bagley; treasurer, Miss D. Price; committee, Mesdames G. Watson, T. Fdbish, Matthews, Misses'M. Sefton, V. Price. Patea: Sixty members attended the monthly meeting of the Patea Womens Institute last week, Mrs. W. H. presiding. She reported that she had called a group committee meeting, when details of a group meeting would be arranged. Mrs. W. Grant’s resignation was accepted with regret, and Mrs. G. C. Hurst and Miss Darbyshire were welcomed as new members. Mrs. A. Carey and Mrs. Crawford were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the Taranaki Federation at HawOfa. Mrs. S. Gunn reported on the garden circle s activities and Miss Hemingway on the drama circle. Mrs. A. Carey, delegate to the Dominion conference, reported on the business of the conference. A demonstration of rug-iiiaking from waste materials was given by Mesdames Carey, Horner, Walton, Bourke and Prescott. Mesdames Paterson, Hamerton, Glermy, Coad, Bourke and Carey were hostesses.
