BOXING CHAMPIONS

TARANAKI TITLE CONTESTS SEVERAL ENTRIES WITHDRAWN. GOOD FIGHTING IN ALL CLASSES. Although the original entries were large several defections reduced the programme from 36 contests to 14 at the Taranaki boxing championships at Patea last night. Ten defections were particularly noticeable in the heavier classes. Championships were won as follows:— Heavyweight. S. Smitheram (Patea). Middleweight: F, Hutchens (Eltham). Welterweight: F. Hutchens. Lightweight: J. Jarvis (Eltham). Featherweight: V. Gordon (Patea). Bantamweight: E. McPherson (Palmerston North). Flyweight: R. Maddern (Hawera). Paperweight: R. Huzziff (Ratapiko). Knock-outs were frequent, some good boxing being witnessed. Five fights were finished by the short route. The best of the contestants seen during the evening were J. Jarvis and F. Hutchens. Both appeared three times, the one a scientific boxer and the other a rugged fighter. There was an unusual incident in the first bout of the welterweight contest between K. Reid (Eltham) and J. Wesley (Opunake). Wesley was cautioned early in the second round for hitting Reid when he was partially risen after tripping, and soon afterwards Reid dropped with a heavy punch to the groin and was counted out. He recovered after treatment by a surgeon, but in the meantime a section of the audience disagreed with what it believed, to be the decision in favour of Wesley. The announcer cleared the air by stating that Reid had won on a foul. Reid was knocked out in the final by Hutchens. Riley, who won his first bout in the paperweight class, sprained his hand and was unable to fight again. V. Gordon could not make the weight in the bantam class and had to withdraw. C. Gordon was in a similar position in the feather class. The results were:— Heavyweight. S. Smitheram (Patea) won by default. Light-Heavyweight. No entries and i no championship awarded. Middleweight. F. Hutchens (Eltham) 10.6} beat R. Willis (Patea) 11.1. Welterweight. K. Reid (Eltham) 10.6} beat A. W. Wesley (Opunake) 10.7 on a foul in the second round. F. Hutchens (Eltham) 10.61 beat R.
