“WONDERFUL PROGRESS”
TARANAKI’S ADVANTAGES. MR. H. G. DICKIE’S MESSAGE. “I congratulate the News on bringing out a special ‘Dairying Number’ as it must be a record of steady and wonderful progress as far as our chief primary industry is concerned. “Reviewing all the ups and downs experienced by the farming community during the last 60 years the most'striking fact is that development has never been retarded and each year sees some hew record established. Our settlers have produced some of the best pasture lands in the world, while through testing and
breeding we have evolved dairy herds whose quality is unsurpassed. “Recently, at Hawera, we celebrated the fact that in the South Taranaki Herd-Testing Association’s territory 8000 cows had produced an average of over 3001 b of butter-fat per cow for the past season, the average per cow for the whole Dominion being 1981 b. We have 57 butter factories, 71 cheese factories, and 31 dual plants in the province, and most of these factories are erected in concrete and equipped with the latest scientific appliances. “We are passing through a period of low prices, •while the suggestion of quotas and restrictions makes the future somewhat doubtful. But I am sure of one thing; that if our 8000 Taranaki farmers are given a free and unrestricted market they will still further develop their industry, and that with an ideal soil and climate to assist them they can successfully compete with, any country in the world. H. G. DICKIE.
