MOTOR FACTORY EXTENSIONS.
That the motor industry continues to thrive is clearly manifested by the big increases in new car registrations, and for some weeks past it has been general knowledge that at least one of Britain's largest manufacturers— namely, the Austin concern—is inaugurating further factory extensions in order to cope with the rising demand for its products. It is now revealed that the new scheme, involving a floor area of 127,000 square feet, will cost in all no less than £28,000 and will complete the reorganisation of the facilities at Longbridge for bodyfinishing, commenced some 15 months ago.
With the £lOO,OOO expended on extensions during this period, the Austin Company will have added over 300,000 square feet of new premises to its already huge factory at Longbridge, to staff which fully over 17,000 workers are now required. The British demand for Austins is ever increasing, and, in addition to this, Austin exports more cars than any other British manufacturer. It is not uncommon for 300 Austins to be shipped overseas in one week. The New Zealand roads are a perpetual reminder of the popularity of “Britain’s Dependable Car,” for more than one out of three British cars in use in the Dominion are Austins. —Advt.
