PRICES may slump, the world may be in chaos, but the natural wealth of Taranaki grows steadily year by year. One has , only to become familiar with the story of the progress of the province through nearly a hundred strenuous years, and to travel through the length and’breadth of the district, to realise how fundamentally, rich, the province is in its resources. And by far the greatest portion of this wealth lies in;the dairying industry. No'other district in New Zealand, possibly no other district in the world, is more adapted to dairying than some parts of Taranaki, with its fertile soil, its temperate climate and the bounteous water supply provided for it by Nature. At the threshhold of another dairying season it is wise to reflect on these facts. Hope springs eternal in the human breast, and it is well for humanity that it does. But it is a great deal more reassuring to know that hope has a sound foundation. With the object of recording for the people of Taranaki in story and picture the part they and their forefathers have played in the development of - New Zealand’s greatest industry, and placing before, them information that should be of value to them, during the coming years, the Daily News presents this special issue to it? readers.

]7ROM virgin bush to stumps and, the first crop of grass; from the first pastures to the smiling country of to-day; and from the first cooperative dairy factory to the fine modern structures now being erected; that is the story told by the illustrations on this page and amplified in the remainder of the issue. Mount Egmont, one of the most beautiful creations produced by, Nature and the pride of every resident of the province, is the natural background of this story, as indeed it is to the everyday life of the people. No community ever had a finer inspiration or a prouder symbol. In the top left picture is shown a farm in its early stage. Round the mountain and through the years we march, to the transformation shown in the top right picture and the 'centrepiece. In the meantime the great dairy industry has made its. organised beginning at the first co-operative dairy factory in .the province, shown in the bottom left illustration. This was situated near Opunake,.and was later sold to a proprietary organisation, the Crown Dairy Company. Bottom right is shown the Warea factory, which has just been completed. Egmont,’.like the dairying industry, has its moods and its dark days. Here it is clear.. May this be a portent, for the days to come.
