LESSONS OF MANY YEARS

GOOD FARMING ESSENTIAL. DR. REAKES’ CHEERING REVIEW. “On the opening: of this, the fortieth season of dairy production on modem lines in Taranaki, I must express to all Taranaki Dairy Companies and producers my appreciation of the wonderful advancement made in the province during that period. It was my good fortune, after my first arrival in the Dominion 37 years ago, to make my first acquaintance with New Zealand dairying by visiting Taranaki and witnessing the good work then being done by hardworking settlers in converting what no.t long before had been more or less virgin land, some of it yet in heavy bush, into good dairy farms. “Most of those earlier farmers were solid men who established a good farming practice which has been worthily followed in later years and improved upon through the additional aid of a scientifically trained advisory service. But though earlier farmers had not available anything like the extent of assistance now derived from agricultural . science they had always the inspiration brought about by the keenness, energy and foresight of men like the late Mr.- Newton King, who was a potent factor in the advancement of Taranaki dairying for many years. “The province may well be proud of its pastures, its herds, its dairying organisation, and the excellent quality of its output, and though the clouds of depressed markets' still hang over the industry, courage and‘tenacity of purpose, combmed with good farming, will enable ' present difficulties to be met to the best advantage, and I sincerely hope, effectively overcome as time goes on. ' C. J. REAKES, . Director-General, Dept, of Agriculture.
