CLUB COMPETITION PROGRESS. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RESULTS. The championships of the Hawera Golf Club are now well under way and the first round in the men’s events will be closed to-morrow. Handicap competitions, the Haig Cup for men, and the Tonks Rose Bowl for the ladies’ club, are also well advanced, while the Anderson Cup will be decided shortly by the final game between R. S. A successful afternoon arranged by the wives of the Awatuna school committee men was held in the Awatuna hall last Wednesday to raise funds for the school. There was a large attendance, and £3 14s 3d was raised. A musical programme opened with pianoforte solos# by Miss Gatenby, Mangatoki, and Miss Carmichael, Awatuna. Miss Gatenby played also her successful test piece from the Hawera competition. Mrs. Alty sang “Juanita.” The folowing won competitions: Mrs. Cassidy, lucky number and a vegetable and flower competition; Mrs. Niccolls, peas in a bottle; Mrs. Brandt, names of kitchen utensils enclosed in a case; Mrs. Kerr, chain-stepping; Miss Elsie Frost. Mrs. Niccolls played the accompaniments. t Sister Carbis, who has completed her course of Plunket training, is spending a holiday with her parents at Awatuna, and will then take a course of Karitane training. Miss Scadden is visiting Mrs. Granville. Mrs. Kerr is' living with Mrs. Korte. Mrs. S. Bankhead, who has been seriously ill in the Hawera hospital, is improving in health. Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Farquhar, senr., are spending a holiday in Rotorua and Hamilton. The Awatuna Bible class arranged a very successful social evening in the hall last Thursday, and there was a good attendance. The evening was pleasantly spent with games and competitions. Mr. Don Richards, Opunake, supplied the music, and the Rev G. Wood and Mr. William Hughes supervised and organised the programme. At the close Mr. Hughes thanked all who had assisted, especially the ladies’ guild and Mr. Richards. ROAD CYCLING AT PATEA. N. RAILTON’S FINE PERFORMANCE. N. Railton secured first place and fastest time in the Patea Amateur Athletic Club’s 11 miles cycling race to Ball Road and return on Saturday. Railton, 36m 30s, 2. CICELEY COURTNEIDGE PICTURE HAWERA OPERA. HOUSE COMEDY. Altough the title of “Soldiers of the King,” the Gainsborough picture coming to the Hawera Opera House to-day and to-morrow is derived from the old song of that name—which song, incidentally, is featured in the /picture—there are three other fine new songs. Written by Noel Gay and Clifford Grey, composers of “Around the Marble Arch” and “The King’s the new numbers featured in “Soldiers of the King” are ‘The Moment I Saw You,” “When Love Comes Knocking at the Door” and “There’s Something About a Soldier.” It will not be long before everyone in town is singing or humming them.
