ST. MARY’S CHURCH FINANCE
NEW PLYMOUTH MEN’S MEETING. CANVASS OF THE PARISHIONERS. Questions connected with the finances of the St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, were considered at a meeting of about 30 men in St. Mary’s Hall last night. The vicar, Archdeacon G. H. Gavin, presided. From a summary of the condition of the finances to date given by Mr. I. W. B. Roy, treasurer of the parish, it was apparent there had been a distinct falling oil in the collections during the winter months. This was usually rectified when the warmer weather arrived, but this year the return to normal had been retarded, and the meeting recognised that something must be done to meet the situation before it became serious. The envelope system of regular giving, the help of a band of women collectors, and the “golden offering” were in turn considered by the meeting, which ultimately decided that the vestry and . 11 other men should wait as a deputation on a meeting of women of the congregation to be convened by the president of the ladies’ guild with the object of formulating a definite plan for a canvass of the parishioners either for membership of the envelope system or for annual or half-yearly subscriptions.
