COLLINS CUP TO HAWERA

TWO YEARS IN SUCCESSION NEW ZEALAND NURSING CONTEST. WELLINGTON TEAMS COMPETE. TESTS UNDER SEVEN HEADINGS. Showing superiority in five of the seven departments, the Hawera B team won the home-nursing competition for the Collins Cup held at Hawera on Saturday. The contest, which is open to all branches of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was won by a Hawera team last year, and the competitions were therefore held at Hawera this year. Hawera B retained the trophy by a margin of over 5 per cent, from Wellington A, with Hawera A in third place. Six teams competed, the other three being New Plymouth, Upper Hutt and Wellington B.

The teams are tested under seven headings—deportment and uniform, dressings and poulticings, sponging, bedmaking, temperatures, bandaging and a questionnaire on home-nursing practice, with a possible total of 700 points. Hawera B scored 606, a percentage of 86.57, with Wellington in second place With 569 1-3, or 81.33 per cent. Dressings and poulticings and the questionnaire were the only departments in which Hawera B was not superior, the team being third to Hawera A and Wellington in the marks for dressings and poulticings, and third to Wellington and Hawera A in the questionnaire. The teams were:— Hawera B: Misses D. Hooper (captain), B. Entwistle (vice-captain), M. Smith, T. Banks, M. Wakelin and I. Nicholas; patient, Geraldine Walshe; coach, Miss Ellen Hunt. Wellington A: Misses A. England (captain), E. Beaumont (vice-captain), V. Darragh, Mrs. E. Fougere, Misses E. Armstrong and M. Bethel; patient, Barbara Fougere; coach, Sister J. Lewis. Hawera A: Miss S. Seaver (captain), Mrs. I. Mitchell (vice-captain), Mrs. C. Sharpe, Misses U. Douglas, J. Nicholas and V. Parsons; patient, Eileen Rawlings; coach, Mrs. S. F. Prosser. New Plymouth: Misses E. Morris (captain), E. Young (vice-captain), V. Ferguson and J. Harkness, Mrs. E. Stephens, Mrs. J. Caradus; patient, Francie Southam; coaches, Mrs. Southam and Miss O’Brien.

Upper Hutt: Mrs. K. Gibbs (captain), Mrs. G. Isted (vice-captain), Misses I. Braid, B. Humphreys, G. Humphreys and E. Prescott; patient, R. Isted; coach, Mrs. Kemp.

Wellington B: Misses E. Robertshaw (captain), M. Wiffen (vice-captain). J. Collett, D. Truscott, L. Allan and F. Emmins; patient, Margaret Bollins; coach, Sister J. Lewis.

The points were awarded as follows:— Hawera B: Deportment and uniform 95, dressings and poulticings 88, sponging 93, bedmaking 95, temperatures 80, bandaging 90, questionnaire 65, total 606. Wellington A: 80, 90 1-3, 88, 92, 70, 80, 69, 569 1-3. Hawera A: 70, 93, 84, 88, 65, 70, 67, 537. New Plymouth: 75, 75, 90, 80, 74, 75, 63 532. Upper. Hutt: 90, 66, 89, 78, 72, 70, 60, 525. Wellington B: 70, 75, 65, 78, 75, 65, 66, 494.

The examiners who had a hard afternoon’s work, were:—Deportment and uniforms, Miss B. A. Campbell (New Plymouth Hospital) and Miss Smith (Craigholm Hospital, Hawera); dressings and poulticings, Miss Jackson (New Plymouth); sponging, Miss Beswick (New Plymouth); bedmaking, Mrs. A. Evans (Hawera); temperatures, Miss Campbell; bandaging, Miss Smith; questionnaire, Sister Jewiss (Opunake). Sister Small (New Plymouth) had a great deal to do with the successful organisation Jof the .'competition.. Others who assisted were Mr. E. K. Cameron, president of the Hawera branch of the Red Cross Society, Mrs. S. R. Veitch, and Misses Young and McCall.

The competition is for a cup donated nine years ago by the late Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins, C.M.G., M.L.C., and has been won as follows: 1926-27, Wellington; 1928, New Plymouth; 1929, New Plymouth and Wellington jointly; 1930-31, Wellington; 1932, New Plymouth; 1933, Hawera. The winning Hawera team last year was Mrs. S. R. Veitch (captain), Misses E. Hunt, S. Ryan, S. Seaver, F. Innes and A. Duke. The Hawera teams entered the competition for-the fiijst time in 1931. Members of. the Hawera Women’s National Reserve entertained the competitors.
