ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

AGED OAKURA FARMER CHARGED. SUPPRESSION OF NAME REFUSED. “One try was quite enough for me,” a 77 years old Oakura farmer replied to Mr. W. H. Woodwird, S.M., at the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court on Saturday when asked if he was going to try to commit suicide again. He was charged with attempted suicide at Oakura on September 1. He was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. A married daughter of the accused asked for suppression of her father’s name. The magistrate said he could see no reason in the circumstances to comply with the request. He asked the accused if he desired suppression, the reply being: “I leave it to your discretion. It will not hurt me one way or the other.” The accused resided with his wife and family, said Sergeant S. G. Clist. .It appeared he was. in the habit of receiving ra cup of tea each morning. On the momnig on September 1 the tea did not arrive until 7 o’clock instead of 5 a.m., the usual time. After leaving the room one daughter noticed smoke issuing from it. The accused was found with a wound in his throat, and the room afire. The sons were called and suppressed the fire before much damage was done. The police were communicated with and the injured man taken to the police station at New Plymouth. Dr. P. C. Davie attended him there and he was then sent to the public hospital. The farm was his, the accused informed the magistrate.
