The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lambs or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They, are compiled by the quotations committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. HIDE MARKET LIFELESS. Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, Sept. 8. The hide market is lifeless. Ltd:—Creamery butter: Finest 78s to 795, first 77s to 78s. Cheese: White 48s to 495, coloured 45s to 465. GOLDMINING RETURNS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, Sept. 8. The Charleston Company sluicing return is 18 ounces 4 dwts 3 grains for 23 shifts in the fortnight ending to-day. Christchurch, Sept. 8. The Golden Sands Company advise as follows: The cutting through of tailings has now been completed and the past week was spent in draining water accumulated in the approach to the face, therefore there was no wash for the past fortnight, but it is anticipated that regular sluicing will be resumed this week. The Bell-Hooper, Cromwell Gold Ltd., return from No. 1 unit only was 9 ounces 1 dwt 4 qrs for the week ended September 7. The Brian Boru dredge return is 20 ounces seven dwts for 123 hours.
