LORD DEVONPORT’S DEATH
FIRST CHAIRMAN OF LONDON PORT British Wireless. . Rugby, Sept. 5. Lord Devonport has died at the age of 78. As Mr. Hudson Kearley he was formerly a Liberal member of Parliament. He abandoned politics and became first chairman of the Port of London Authority, the properties of which were valued at £23,000,000, Now they are assessed at £40,000,000. He held the post until 1925. He took a keen interest in the development of the port, and each year he returned his annual salary of £7OOO. He began life in relatively poor circumstances, but was mainly responsible for building up the huge wholesale provision business of Kearley and Tonge, the controlling interest in which was purchased for approximately £4,000,000 by the International Tea Company.
