RESCUE OF SUNKEN SHIP

THE PORTLAND HAULED ASHORE. SEVERELY HOLED AT THE BOW. By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. The trawler Spray on Wednesday secured a masthead of the sunken auxiliary scow Portland and heaved her on to an even keel. Later, with other assistance, the vessel was hauled a quarter of a mile to within five chains of the beach.

Several attempts were made before the vessel was hauled to low-water mark. Then the hole in the bow was patched with tarpaulins. Pumps were rigged and gradually the vessel was emptied and hauled to high-water mark. The Portland was holed on the starboard side near the bow, it was reported to-day. A heavy log 2J feet through and about 30 feet long was seen drifting near the scene of the wreck, and it is thought possible this was the cause of the mishap.
