WOMEN’S DIVISION

North Taranaki Provincial Executive: The executive met in the Y.W.C.A. hall on August 10, when 15 branches were represented. The question of displaying a court at the autumn show was left to be dealt with at the November meeting. An invitation to attend an address by Miss Andrews on September 8 was received. Mrs. Harris proposed that a letter be sent to the New Plymouth Borough Council informing it that the rest room at the back of the shop would be ready for inspection next week and asking for its support of same. Mrs. McPhillips wished to resign from the shop committee but was prevailed upon to carry on until some one was found to take her place. Two addresses were given, one by Mrs. Ayckboume on the peace movement and the other by Mrs. Arthur on cancer research. Mrs. Marsh reported that a new branch had beep formed at Purangi. Midhirst: The Midhirst branch held the last of the series of euchre parties on Tuesday night. There was a good attendance. The results were: Ladies, Miss I. Vickers 1, Mrs. Fowler 2; men, Mr. Adlam 1, Mr. Fear 2. Mrs. Gooch supplied the music for the dance, and Miss Hendry played an extra. There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting held on Wednesday. It was decided to donate £2 to the Stratford relief committee. Help had been sent to a family in distress. There was a splendid number of entries for the competition. Miss L. Dill won the first prize, and Mrs. Mead’s two entries tied for second prize. Mrs. Rumball and Mrs. Clements, of the Opunake branch, gave demonstrations on wool work, tatting and rug-making. The hostesses were Mrs. P. Walker and Mrs. Clem Phillips. Okaiawa: The monthly meeting of the Okaiawa branch of the Women’s Division was held at Miss F. Betts’ home on Monday, Miss Washer presiding over a good attendance. A special welcome was given to Mrs. Dalgetty, Ngatea Women’s Institute. It was decided to help the Farmers’ Union at a dance it intends to hold. The president gave a report on the last executive meeting at Hawera and it was decided to help with the display at the Hawera show if the space was available. A long report was given by the president of the work at the annual conference at Wellington to which she and the secretary went as delegates. Mrs. Walters, Manaia, gave a demonstration on wool rug-making. Brixton: The Brixton branch of the Women’s Division held a successful dance in the Huirangi hall on Monday evening, the dance floor being crowded, while ten tables were occupied at euchre, which was in charge of Messrs. McCaul and Schroder. Mrs. St. George and Mrs. Pennington tied, Mrs. St. George winning the re-play. Mr. Richards was first among the men and Mr. R. Foreman second. Rowe’s orchestra supplied excellent music for the dance, while Mr. N. Denton was master of ceremonies. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr. E. Lash and Mrs. Gribbon and Mr. McGinty and Miss Johnson. An extra was played by Mrs. Pennington. Hurford Road: At the monthly meetMrs. Spence presided over an attendance of 20. Mrs. C. J. Harris gave an instructive address on the Dominion conference. It was decided to donate £1 10s to the reserve fund of the exchange mart. Misses N. Berridge, D. Vickers and M. Schrider were hostesses. Okoke: The monthly meeting of the Okoke branch was held on August 8, Mrs. Whittaker presiding. The invitation to join Urenui in its flower show and sale of articles from the Disabled Soldiers’ Institute was accepted. The unmetaljed portion of the Piko Road was discussed and deplored. The president had had to travel two miles by sledge. Lessons in inlaid pewter work were offered to members, and a beauti-fully-designed door mat made from old felt hats was exhibited. Awatuna: There was an excellent attendance at the monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Bourke presided. A competition for an eggless cake brought forth 17 entries, the quality of which created much surprise. The judge, Mrs. Gargan, Riverlea, found her task a most difficult one, and finally made the following awards: Mrs. R. Hartley 1, Mrs. W. Lind 2, Mrs! Roy Pepperell 3. Mrs. Farquhar junr. gave a demonstration on gold art work, done on organdie or silk, which was watched with close attention. It was arranged to send for £2 worth of goods to sell from the Disabled Soldiers’ Association at Wellington. A letter of thanks was received from the Kaponga Red Cross Society for quilts made from peggy squares. The Awatuna ladies made their squares twelve inches and the school children six inches square. It was with regret that members learned from Mrs. Bourke that owing to want of time she was compelled to resign her position as president, and wished to be relieved of her duties. Mrs. Kedgeley eulogised the work done by Mrs. Bourke for the branch, and in having continuously planned the meetings’ programmes for so long. It was also through Mrs. Bourke’s good organising abilities that the branch had achieved so much and gained such strength. Mrs. Bourke said she would continue to take an interest in the branch, and perhaps after a rest would resume her duties. Mrs. Coxhead, Te Kiri, also a keen worker, was elected president. A glory box is being filled by members for any emergency calls for help. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Niccolls, R. Pepperell and Farquhar. Oakura: The monthly meeting of the Oakura branch was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Harris presiding over a large attendance. It was decided to organise Red Cross classes if sufficient support was forthcoming. A request from the Disabled Soldiers’ Association for help in disposing of their handwork was acceded to. An interesting demonstration on felt hat cushion making was given by Mrs. Penwarden. The month’s competition, a sponge, was won by Mrs. McGregor, Mrs. Cochrane being second and Mrs. Wilkins third. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Cochrane, Beale and Haskell. Matapu: A meeting of the Matapu branch was held on Tuesday. Owing to ill-health Mrs. Riddick, the president, found it necessary to resign, and Mrs. H. Calder was elected president for the remainder of the year. It was decided to secure the Stratford Scottish concert party to put on a programme at the birthday function.
