NEWS OF MR. “BUD” POWDRELL. I ——~ GLASGOW-LONDON CYCLING TRIP. , Interesting news of Mr. “Bud” Pbwdrell, a son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Pow- : drell, Hawera, has been received by a ; Hawera friend. Mr. Powdrell, who was formerly an officer in the Bank of Ausi tralasia at Hawera, left about th 6 end of i March, determined to work his way to England. He obtained a position in the refrigerating department of the motor-Ship Arapawa at New Plymouth and after a ’ voyage of two and a-half months, arrived in England. Since then he has had various adventures, including a cycling ' trip frdm Glasgow to London, and he is ' now engaged in advertising the products of Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., Tooley S+reet, London. From Mr. Powdrell’s letter, it appears that he has been greatly impressed with the charm of England' artd is determined to stay there for some time. The trip Home was via the Horn. Arriving at London, he stayed for some ten days, and then went to Glasgow, where he purchased a bicycle, intending to go to the North of Scotland. Bad weather at Oban, north of Glasgow, forced him to turn back. From Glasgow he cycled to Edinburgh, joining up with another cyclist at (jre’ra, the famous town for ma riages. I Edinburgh, said Mr. Powdrell, was a I beautiful city and formed a great contrast to the dirty cities of Glasgow, Liv- ! erpool and Manchester. The trip was ' made in easy stages and the journey was ' interesting from every point of view. An unusual feature of the week-ends was the thousands of cyclists who rode through the countryside, and the popularity of tandems was immerise. Arrived at London, Mr. Powdrell secured his position with Amalgamated Dairies, and now travels all over the countryside advertising the product. One of the features of hi: stay was a glimpse of Pete ■ Desjardins, the world’s diving champion. Those who remember Mr. Powdrell’s frequent and not always Successful attempts from the top board at the Hawera baths will be pleased to know that he is now able to do variations on the isander and the rest without difficulty. MATAPU DISTRICT NEWS. EUCHRE PARTIES AND DANCES. The fortnightly euchre and dance was held in the Matapu hall on Tuesday, when there was an excellent attendance, ■the euchre prizes were won by: Ladies, Miss F. Reid 1, Miss S. Gatenby 2 (after a play-off with Mesdames Reid and Guy, Misses P. Robertson and Miss Riley);' men, Mr. F. Speed 1, Mr. Harrisoh 2 (after a play-off with Mr. J. Reid). After the euchre the hall was cleared for dancing, music being played by Miss M. Guy and extras by Miss B. Seed. Mr. E. Guy was master of ceremonies. A euchre party and dance held in the Hunter Road hall whs well attended. Prizes were won by: Ladies, Miss J. Findlay 1, Miss M. Startup 2; men, .Mr., A.’ , Lobbin 1, Mr. F .Speed 2.
