TUKAPA DEFEATS TAINUI
CLOSE CONTEST AT AWAKING. J. SULLIVAN’S DECIDING TRY. A burst of speed, in which J. Sullivan ran three-quarters of the length of the field straight through the opposition to dive across' the line and score under the posts, gained the decision for the Tukapa senior team in a match against the Tainui Sub-Union representatives at Awakino during the week-end in the annual fixture between these teams. The match was a splendid game played in fine weather before a good attendance, and the score of 19 points to 14 was a good indication of the merits of the respective teams. Tainui opened the scoring account when Tukapa was penalised shortly after the game had commenced. C. Hepbum had no difficulty with the kick. For Tukapa Webster scored from a movement initiated by Brown, but the kick failed. Tainui then continued to pile up the points. J. Hanna was the first to cross the line and almost immediately Meredith scored a try, which C. Hepburn converted from a difficult angle. Before half-time Hepburn again kicked a penalty goal. At the opening of the second spell with the score 14—3 against them Tukapa made a good recovery. Hepburn received an injury and was replaced by R. Coogan. Th? loss was a serious one for Tainui. Three points were added for Tukapa as the result of a penalty kick by R. Knott. Wallace made a fine opening for Sullivan to score behind the posts. R. Knott converted. Webster scored the next try, Knott failing with the kick. With the scores even both sides made desperate efforts to gain the decision and Tukapa were hard-pressed for some time until J. Sullivan made his spectacular run and scored the extra points being easily added by E. Wallace. Mr. K. Black refereed.
