FIFTH GRADE FOOTBALL.
TUKAPA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. Tukapa fifths defeated School A in a fast match at Sanders Park by 15 (five unconverted tries) to 3 (an unconverted try). From a scrum on the Tukapa twenty-five Gayton set his backs in action. Lynch cut in and ran for about 40 yards through the School team to score under the posts. He missed with the kick. From the kick off the School forwards followed up fast and Tukapa was hard pressed. Moki (School) made a determined bid for the line but was thrown into touch. Tukapa gradually worked School back, and from a scrum Gayton dived over. At the beginning of the second half Lynch made a great run down the line. He passed to Ward, who showed a fine burst of speed to score in the corner. For about ten minutes the School for-
wards took charge and Tukapa was severely pressed, but Hannan slipped through and took play to the School twenty-five. Hard forward play followed for a long time. Then Berge dived over for Tukapa. School rallied and Moki just missed a try. Tukapa came with a rush but School swung the play back and Moki scored in the comer after a great run. Tukapa followed .up the kick off and had School pinned down in its own twenty-five. Twice Hickland (Tukapa) dribbled over the line but School forced. School backs were tackling well, for time after time Tukapa went down with passing rushes. From a scrum on the School twenty-five Gayton worked the blind and Hannan scored in the corner after a dashing run. Time sounded immediately. The School forwards were as good as Tukapa, but the Tukapa backs were too fast and clever for School. Tukapa thus wins the championship.
