HAWERA TRACK GALLOPS

CARFEX PERFORMS SPLENDIDLY.

HARVEST MOON’S GREAT SHOWING.

There were unpleasant weather conditions for track operations at Hawera on Saturday morning. Light drizzling rain fell steadily throughout and a strong northerly wind made matters worse. Consequently the trial grass on which all galloping was done was rather softer and slower than it had been earlier in the week. As the wind was blowing up the straight assisting the horses excellent times were registered in two-furlong sprints. The Tiger (Conway) dashed over three furlongs in a shade under 38s. He hit out pleasingly and is rapidly approaching racing trim. Eara (Vaughan) took 54s for half a mile, striding along in good style. Carfex (Vaughan) recorded the best effort of the morning when he reeled off half a mile in 51s. The Nigger Minstrel gelding is working impressively, each of his last three gallops being well above the average. Aga Khan (Robinson) and Diagano (Vaughan) were to have been companions over three furlongs but the latter took charge of his rider before the starting peg was reached and bolted once round on the sand before he was pulled up. Aga Khan then went on his own, and had little difficulty in covering the distance in 51s. As usual he was not asked to do his best.

Onewhetu (Cotter) held a slight advantage over Green Linnet (Tucker) at the close of three furlongs in 39 3-ss. Onewhetu continues to shape satisfactorily. Considering that she has been in work for only a very short time Green Linnet’s'showing was a good one. Evidently she has lost none df her old-time pace. Kaiteremai (Grindlay) scampered over a couple of furlongs in 26 l-ss. He strode along freely and has apparently fully recovered from the slight mishap with which he met at the hunt.

Colossal (Grindlay) was also sprinted a similar distance, putting plenty of vim into his task to register 25 l-ss. It was a useful workout. From a straggling start Richfield (Coyle) left the half mile peg best to lead Rose Ray (Walker) and Crennatown (Grindlay) throughout to take 53 3-ss. Richfield eventually finished about five lengths ahead of Rose Ray, who was 10 lengths clear, of Crennatown. Too much notice should not be taken of this trial as right from the start each was galloping practically alone. Nevertheless Richfield worked x-esolutely and is on the improve. Both Crennatown and Rose Ray were inclined to loaf on finding themselves without a companion.

Taitoru (Grindlay) left half a mile behind him in 52 3-ss. He bowled along nicely. Silver Wings (Grindlay) slipped over two furlongs untimed. She hit out well. Among the Jumpers,

Cynical Kid (Grindlay) schooled in capital manner over the hurdles. He has had plenty of experience at the game both in the hunting field and in the show ring so naturally has little to learn how.

March Alone (Tucker) was sent over five steeplechase fences—three brushes, the post-and-rails and hencoop. He jumped the two wooden fences splendid and also the first brush, but cleared the last two rather slowly. Nevertheless he improved on hs previous displays. One of the most brilliant exhibitions seen over the schooling hurdles for a considerable time was given by . Harvest Moon (Grindlay) who was sent over six fences in company with Stanchion (Tucker). Setting a very fast pace he stood off in great style at every fence, gaming five or six lengths on Stanchion at each jump. His only mistake was made at the last fence, which he hit rather hard, due no doubt to his being rather tired after the exceptionally fast pace at which he had been going. For a novice it was a fine display and it seems that in Harvest Moon the owner, Mr. W. Kirkland, and the trainer, J. Brown, have a worthy successor to that smart little hurdler, Tenacre. Stanchion again jumped moderately and was completely outclassed by his companion. Among those to be given useful pace work exercise on either the sand or oval were Sandlark, Flower Bag, Ashes, Friesland, Silk Sox, Lowenburg, Gold Gleam, Waitaunaha, Autumn Leaf, Arouse, Benedictine, Exquisite, Link Divine, Daniloff gelding, Kaola, Mint Leaf gelding and filly and Nigger Minstrel filly.
