HAWERA COUNTY CONTROL

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. PROGRESS OF TANGAHOE WORK. Satisfactory progress on the Tangahoe hill deviation work was reported at the monthly meeting cf the Hawera County C< uncil on Saturday. Those present were Crs. J. B. Murdoch (in the chair), T. A. Winks, W. Rothery, J. Lander, A. G. Larcom, A. E. Leath, E. A. 'Washer, C. J. Preston and J. W. J. Harding (county clerk). Lysaght Road had keen metalled with crushed stone for fifty chains, reported Mr. A. Muggeridge (engineer), ten .chains having been done from Batten’s pit. The road was being rounded and rolled, some of the dust being used for blending and the work would be finished early this week. As soon as the roller was available Whareroa Road would be scarified and crushed metal would be applied where required. Ohangai Road from Ketemarae Road had the gaps in the metal joined up as far as Mr. Hair’s gate. One portion of the old metal had to be renewed as it was practically worn out. A start would be made next week with Whakatau Road, where ■ there was about 15 chains to be done. Maben Road was being widened where required. The cuttings at the Tangahoe deviation were proceeding satisfactorily. A start higher up the. hill would have to be made as there was no more room to tip the soil until the piers of the bridge were up. With the new face all the spoil would have to be. carted across the road by lorry. There were 5000 yards to be disposed of. The cutting on the Hawera side of the river was causing no trouble regarding the disposal of spoil. A statement of receipts and expenditure for 1933-34 was received from the Normanby Town Board, being required, explained Cr. Murdoch, for consideration of what subsidy the council would pay the board for work on main highways. The statement w:s received, the chairman stating that it did not make clear how £132 17s sd, the item for repairs and improvements, had been expended. A deputation requesting the council to give a trial to benzine supplies controlled by English and New Zealand capital was heard and the matter discussed later. The engineer expressed himself as satisfied with the present service and supply, and although councillors thought the suggestion of a three months’ trial might be adopted, it was decided not to make any move in the matter. DEATH OF OLD RESIDENT. MRS. C. E. C. SARGENT, HAWERA. The Sargents settled first at Cambridge and after ten years moved on to Hawera.
