FIRST FATALITY IN WAR
HUNGARIAN SOLDIER KILLED ON BRIDGE On July 29, the 20th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, the body of the first soldier who fell will be brought to Hungary from Zimony, now Jugoslavia. On July 29, 1914, after the Serbian declaration of war, the Serbians opened fire round the Zimony-Belgrade railway bridge, where the 68th AustroHungarian lasted barely an hour, but the Austro-Hungarian ammunition ran out, and two infantrymen were sent to the Customs House to bring a boxful to the bridge. When the soldiers reached the bridge with the munitions, one of them fell wounded, while the other, a man called Paul Kovacs, was shot through the heart. These facts have been furnished by .an eye-witness to a newspaper which has raised the subscription necessary to .honour the first soldier who fell in the war.
