ATTEMPT TO BIREAK RECORD LOS ANGELES TO NEW YORK. MAJOR FITZMAURICE’S PLANS/ MAIL SERVICE OVER ATLANTIC. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. New York, Aug. 2. Major Fitzmaurice, who arrived to-day with Flight-Sergeant Eric Bonner, his co-pilot for the Melbourne centenary flight, declared that before the race he would attempt to break the present 13 hours 5 minutes non-stop record from Los Angeles to New York held by Mr. Rickenbacher. Major Fitzmaurice will confer with the Washington authorities on the possibility of establishing a regular New York to England mailplane service within a year. ’ . , .. u Major Fitzmaurice, an Irishman, with the Germans Baron Hunefeld and Captain Kohl, made the first east to west non-stop Atlantic flight in a German monoplane. They left Ireland and landed in Labrador, the distance being 2300 miles and the time occupied 36 hours.
KINGSFORD SMITH’S NEW MACHINE
HOPES TO WIN CENTENARY RACE.
Rec. 7.20 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 3. Having successfully undertaken a special load and speed test with the plane Lady Southern Cross to-day, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith flew the machine at a maximum speed dash in the fastest flight ever made in Australia. Sir Charles refuses to divulge the flying speed, but says he is satisfied he has an excellent chance of being first past the post in the centenary race.
