ALASKA AS A NAVAL BASE
UNITED STATES’ CONSIDERATION. TWO SOUGHT FOR EACH OCEAN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington, July 25. In response to a question at the Press conference to-day the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. C. A. Swanson, said Alaska was among the areas being considered as a site for a Pacific naval base. He emphasised, however, that no more consideration was being given to Alaska than to any of a dozen other sites. “It is the policy of the navy to consider establishing two operating bases in the Pacific and two in the Atlantic,” he said. “At the present time ten Martin bombing machines are in Alaska after a flight from Washington, and a seaplane flotilla is now at Seattle preparatory to a visit to Alaska.”
