'DEAD HAND OF CANBERRA’
COMMONWEALTH POLITICS EFFECT OF FEDERAL CAPITAL CONDEMNED AS A FAILURE DRIVING THE BEST MEN OUT By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 11.20 p.m. Melbourne, July 26. The Hon. W. S. Kent Hughes, Victorian Minister of Railways, in a speech condemned Canberra as a Federal capital. He declared it was a ghastly failure and was driving the best men from politics. Notable instances were Mr. Stanley M. Bruce, now Australian High Commissioner in London, Mr. J. G. Latham, Minister for Internal Affairs and Industry, Sir Walter Massy Greene, Assistant Minister, Sir Henry Gullett, former Minister of Trade and Customs, and now Sir Harry Lawson, who were not prepared to give up their time to travelling and living there. “It is impossible not to realise the dead hand of Canberra in the political affairs of Australia,” Mr. Hughes added.
