RATAPIKO SOCIAL EVENTS.

SUCESSFUL FUNCTIONS HELD. The Ratapiko Cricket Club held a plain and fancy dress dance and euchre party on Tuesday. There was a large attendance from Stratford, Tuna and Inglewood. The many-coloured fancy costumes lent a carnival air to the function. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Hughson, Inglewood, arid Air. N. Karalus. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Jean Linklater and Mr. T. Lobb. A competition was won by Mr. F. Goodwin. Mrs. O. D. James and Mr. B.- Vinsen judged the fancy costumes, awarding the • prizes to Miss Wellington, Tuna, -“Gipsy Queen,” and Mr. Cyril Henderson, Tuna, “Query.” Mr. Doug. Therkleson was master of ceremonies and extras were played by Mr. C. Henderson. Vinsen’s orchestra played the music. A carnival party in aid of the gold candidate, Miss Veronica Karalus, was held at Mr. and Mrs. C. Young’s residence on Friday. There was a large attendance. An enjoyable evening was

spent with cards, games and dancing. The card tournament was controlled by Mr. Fred Hill, the winners being Mrs. E. Karalus and Mr. J. Wells, who tied with Mr. E. Karalus, winning in the playoff. Novelty competitions resulted: Cake, Mr. J. Wells; surprise box, Master Gordon Gladding; beans in a bottle, Mr. W. Wells; cigarettes, Mr. C. Young. A statue waltz was won by Miss Helen Young and Mr. Ivan McAllum and a Monte Carlo by Mrs. R. Perrott and Mr. E. Knowles. Dance music was played by Mr. and Mrs. C. Hall, Mrs. Perrott and Mr. N. Karalus supplying extras. Thanks were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Young for so hospitably receiving such a large attendance and also to Mrs. Young for giving a handsomely decorated cake. Mr. and Mrs. B. Dust entertained at a five hundred party on Thursday, the prizes being won by Miss Dot Hill and Mr. Taylor. Airs. J. Lepper ,who has been slaying in Inglewood, returned on Saturday. Miss Dot. Hill left on Monday to spend a* holiday in the Puniho district. ■ The school children are practising for

their concert which is to be held shortly. Miss Mavis Grigg is spending a holiday in New Plymouth with her grandfather, Mr. Moorby. TANGARAKAU NOTES. HEAVY RAIN’S EFFECT ON ROAD. Recent rains at Tangarakau have made the Raekohua Road so bad that even horse vehicles have been bogged. The road in places * .sembles a pig-sty with ruts up to 2ft 6in in depth. Mr. P. Bevin in his new car was bogged on Saturday night but next day the car was hauled to safety by a team of horses. , A few elderly people of Tangarakau have offered their services oh Wednesday evenings to encourage young pople of Tangarakau to indulge in dancing. Tangarakau won by five goals to four in a fast and open game. Both teams were not at full strength, bu* a very evenly contested game resulted. During a recent fine day a few enthusiastic cricketers were seen practicing in preparation for the coming season. The would-be cricketers abandoned their game after one ball and two bats had been broken. Mr. Tom Sullivan, New Plymouth, visit • ed Tangarakau on Saturday. Messrs. Sweeney, Todd and Stuart were the guests of Mr. R, C. McCartie during the week-end. Mr. Jim Southby vjsited Tangarakau at the week-end. Miss Jean Hill has left for a short holiday. Messrs. C. R.
