At the last census it was ascertained that nearly 70 per cent, of the poultry flocks in the country came within the category of being fewer than 50 birds, states the Nelson Mail. Of that 70 per cent, nearly 40 per cent, were between 12 and 25 birds, and slightly more than 22 per cent, were between 25 and 50 birds. More than 30 per cent, of the blocks consisted of fewer than 12 birds. In 1926 the South Island had a higher per capita density of poultry than the North Island. The South Island was also the main source of food supply to the industry, and it is estimated that at the present time the poultry flocks of the Dominion consume about 2,000,000 bushels of wheat a year.
