NEW SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

JOHN McGLASHAN COLLEGE.

MR. R. G. C. McNAB CHOSEN.

Dunedin, June 20.

The Board of Governors of John McGlashan College has appointed Mr. Robert George Colin McNab, M.A., to be principal of the college as successor to Mr. C. M. Gilray, who is leaving Dunedin to take up the position of principal of Scotch College, Melbourne. The new principal was bom in Auckland, and was educated at Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College. At school Mr. McNab gained junior and senior education board scholarships, and he entered the university a holder of a junior university scholarship. In the course of a distinguished university career, Mr. McNab won a senioi b university scholarship -in English, and gained college premiums in English and French and the Early English Text Society’s prize, and took his M.A. degree with honours -in English and French. Mr. McNab’s earlier training expert ence was at Auckland Grammar School and Christchurch Boys’ High School, and since 1920 he has been a member of the staff of the Wdnganui Collegiate School. In 1927 Mr.' McNab was appointed housemaster at Hadfield House, the largest house in the school, and he is now senior housemaster as well as being first assistant of the'school. Mr, McNab is well qualified to teach English, French, Latin and history to university scholarship standard, and he has for some years been in charge of the English department throughout the school. Some years ago he reestablished the college dramatic society, which is now a very flourishing school institution, and he is also responsible for the editing and management of the school magazine. Mr. McNab has played cricket and hockey for Auckland University College, and on the outdoor side of the school life he has played a very active part as coach of football and cricket teams, and as second in command of the Collegiate School’s. Cadet Corps. The new principal comes to Dunedin with excellent testimonials from all headmasters under whom he has served, and the board regards itself as very fortunate indeed in having been able to secure for the college a principal whose record and experience fit him so well for the position to which he has been appointed. Mr. McNab will take over his new duties this year at the beginning of the third term.
