WEALTH OF AUSTRALIA

TREMENDOUS WOOL VALUE

“GROWERS’ TROUBLES ARE OVER.”

FINE EXHIBITION AT SYDNEY.

PREVIOUS SHOWS SURPASSED.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 9.50 p.m. Sydney, June 22.

Speeches at the sheep show to-day were optimistic.

The New South Wales Premier, Mr. B. S. B. Stevens, said the wool clip in the past 10 years in Australia were valued at £677,000,000, thus exceeding by £30,000,000 the total gold yield. Wool contributed 60 per cent, of the country’s wealth. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Hugh Main, declared that this year’s exhibition of woolly aristocrats surpassed any previous exhibition, both in numbers and quality. Experts expressed the opinion that the woolgrowers’ troubles were over for good. He evoked applause when he hinted that owing to the Federal Government’s improved financial position tire land tax would probably be removed. Senator Guthrie, the foremost Corriedale breeder, predicted the progressive development of Corriedale breeding, probably displacing Merinos on the coastal belt, where conditions were more suitable for Corriedales. He added that Corriedale wool commanded a better price in New Zealand than Merino. A magnificent Merino ram owned by the estate of the late Mr. F. E. Body, Trangie, was to-day adjudged grand champion of the show. Mr. A. T. Merriman, Yass, was runner-up. The Exhibits of Border Leicesters this year Were four, compared with two in previous years. There would have been five had Mr. W. Rennie not been held up by the strike in New Zealand. The judge had great difficulty in making the awards owing to the presence of splendid types of New Zealand and Australian sheep. Mr. Donald Grant, New Zealand, found the competition this year unusually severe.
